    Looks to me like there isn't much difference (as far as stock market timing) if a government devalues or if they default and move to a new currency. I believe Argentina did this. I suspect that currency controls may play a more significant role the more severe the situation. So the manner in which one is able to invest is probably more restricted.

    Thanks for the comments. I intend to go through this exercise for a number of widely followed indicators. While I'm sure many are useful for confirming market moves, my primary interest is in forecasting market moves. So many indicators are released each month and quarter and the market reacts violently in many cases, I'm interested to know if these reactions are justified. As per market timing being a fools errand, this is the conventional wisdom. However, looking at a list of the top HF's by gain, it seems that market timing plays a meaningful role...http://bit.ly/KHi1NO
