  • The All-Defensive Team: 25 Low Beta Dividend Stocks For An Uncertain Market (Part 1) [View article]
Hi FCARONE - We agree with you that options are excellent tools for investors. Selling cash secured puts on stocks you would like to own at a lower price is a fantastic strategy to generate income while forcing you to remain patient with your "Buy Zones"..

We share your concerns about stop loss orders as well...

  • The All-Defensive Team: 25 Low Beta Dividend Stocks For An Uncertain Market (Part 1) [View article]
Hi slam stocks - Your comment is an excellent one. Most stocks (even low beta stocks) are "overpriced" right now. We publish Buy Zone reports on our website for all of our high rated stocks...and there is definitely a dearth of good value opportunities right now. That said, there is theoretically less downside risk with low beta stocks and we always recommend buying in stages. It's ok to take small nibbles of good stocks, but leave yourself some dry powder to buy more on a dip (i.e., you will never be able to time the exact bottom).

For what it is worth, we focus on four key levels of support when determining our “Buy Zones” (which are points at which long-term dividend investors should feel comfortable starting to build a position in the respective stocks):

    (1) Valuation – Support levels based on historical valuation multiples
    (2) Technical – Support from short and long-term trend lines
    (3) Volatility - Target correction levels based on historical volatility and draw down
    (4) Yield - Support levels based on forward dividend yield

Agreed, Dave! CTSH certainly has the balance sheet and cash flow that you look for in a dividend stock...so it isn't too "wild"... :)

Good luck to you. Thanks for the comments.

Hi Stock_doc - Good suggestions. We like INTC and we own it in the Model Portfolio, but the price is a little rich here. CSCO has definitely entered the radar after the recent sell off. We would consider this stock a "Dividend in the Rough". It doesn't rate particularly well in our system (only 30), but it does have great ratings for Financial Stability (90) and Dividend Sustainability (90)...so it could be worth taking a chance on at some point.

Nice cost basis on CA, Dave! Our cost basis in the Model Portfolio is slightly higher ($22.63). We've considered taking some profits given the nice rally over the past 12 months and recently sold some covered calls on our position.

Agree with you on QCOM. What is your dividend thesis on CTSH? It's obviously a great company that generates alot of cash...but it hasn't set a plan for returning that cash to shareholders.
