  • How Low Will Apple Shares Go In A Major Market Correction? [View article]
Thank you, dsorchestra90. You seem to be the only one that fully read the article. There are two key things that readers are ignoring:

    1. We own Apple stock and like the company and the fundamentals.
    2. We think the stock is currently a "buy" based purely on fundamentals.

Unfortunately, as we pointed out in the article (and as you have pointed out in your comments), stock prices tend to diverge materially from fundamentals during a market downturn...

  • How Low Will Apple Shares Go In A Major Market Correction? [View article]
To be fair, $450 is the low end of our "buy zone"...and AAPL was at this level as recently as about 3 months ago (1/25/12)...

  • Buy Gold In May And Go Away [View article]
Martin - while I appreciate the debate, the "timing" of the gold trade was meant to be silly (poking fun at the "sell in may and go away" adage). You are correct that picking almost any entry/exit point for gold would yield similar results over that period. Regardless, We think Gold is a good buy at current levels and we laid out our fundamental reasons why gold should continue to move higher from here...

  • Will The Employment Report Be The Tipping Point For Equities? [View article]
Thanks, RS. There is no doubt that equities have a huge tailwind right now as investors continue to plow money into stocks in search of yield. Unfortunately, the fundamentals remain weak and many will be left holding the bag when the market eventually corrects...

  • Taking Cover: A Strategy For Dividend Stock Investors During A Market Pullback [View article]
Hi Jeffry - You would need at least 100 shares to write a covered call since one call contract represents 100 shares of stock. Obviously, the more shares you have, the less brokerage fees will dilute your return...but fees are definitely important to considering when analyzing the strategy...

  • Taking Cover: A Strategy For Dividend Stock Investors During A Market Pullback [View article]
You are correct, IncomeYield...covered calls are by no means a free lunch. One of the downsides of the strategy is losing your stock (albeit at a higher price). Its a balancing act between premium yield, upside profit, and margin of safety. At the end of the day, its a risk/reward decision that will vary by investor...

  • Annaly Still A Buy Despite Another Dividend Cut [View article]
Hi dieuwer - Dividend stocks typically underperform the S&P during strong rallies. Case in point, $XLU (the S&P Utility ETF) is down YTD. It's more relevant to look at total return comparisons over longer time periods to smooth out the short term cycles.

    1-year total return - NLY: 2.8% / S&P: 10.5%
    3-year total return - NLY: 84.9% / S&P: 94.5%
    5-year total return - NLY: 110.0% / S&P: 10.7%
    10-year total return - NLY: 196.6% / S&P: 44.5%

While NLY has underperformed the S&P since the crisis, the stock has been the CLEAR winner over the long term. In addition, NLY investors have received a stable annual income stream (even in years when NLY underperformed the S&P)...

  • Chimera: An mREIT Not Worth Owning [View article]
We have updated all the numbers for the recent quarter and highlighted some additional risks...and the situation still looks grim for CIM. We love mREITs in general...but non-agency focused REITs are not worth the risk in the current environment. Why would you hold onto CIM and wait for it to turn around if you can invest in a less risky agency REIT (e.g., AGNC or NLY) with a similar yield?
