  • Recession and Sliding Oil Costs Not Helping Boone's Wind Farm Plans [View article]
The Pickens Plan is just that, a PLAN. Which is more than anyone else has come up with. And the door is still open. Everyone with a better solution is still free to step up to the plate. (That's funny, no one else wants to grab a bat.)

  • What Does Obama's Cabinet Have in Store for Alternative Energy? [View article]
I can't WAIT to see the reaction of consumers to the DOUBLING of their electric bills (not to mention the coming increase in gasoline taxes). This RATIONING of fuels will NOT (repeat NOT!) resolve our domestic energy shortfalls.

  • Boone Pickens' Holdings [View article]
Gee, I guess this means his net worth may be cut in half, all the way down to maybe $2 billion. Poor fella! I recall him saying once he became a billionaire four different times. It's simply the nature of his business.

  • Carbon Holds Up Against Other Commodities [View article]
Thanks for the post. This stuff is truly fascinating.

I really don't understand it, though, although I am generally aware of the importance of these new carbon markets to electric utilities.

Gee, poor Boone! How much do you figure his portfolio is now UP over the past 5 years? Where do you think it will be 5 years from today?

  • No Relationship To Reality - Cramer's Mad Money (9/10/08) [View article]
Putting the words "GM" and "No Relationship to Reality" in the same sentence is EXACTLY on target.

They would seemingly rather count on the Congress for a bailout instead of building the highly fuel efficient gasoline and natural gas fueled vehicles they build elsewhere here.

Is it any wonder we have an energy crisis with the corporate and political leadership we have in America? As Cramer would say, "They DO Nothing!"

And just think of all the stories you could make up about Warren Buffett. Unlike Boone Pickens, he owns a wide range of companies he's purchased in numerous industries. You could claim he's trying to gain control of the insurance industry, municipal bond underwriting, or even casual dining. Give me a break, will you please.

As is the problem with most conspiracy theories, the one about Boone Pickens selling water is short on facts and long on ardor. To begin with, he's an oil man, not a water man. The last time I looked, BP Capital had investments in dozens of ENERGY companies, not WATER companies. That doesn't mean he doesn't own some water, billionaires make lots of different investments. Finally, if there's so much money to be made in water stocks, I'd suggest YOU invest in them. There are plenty available at cheap prices.

  • Compressed Natural Gas: Key to American Energy Independence? [View article]
    Rko,

Thanks for the hydrate info. Yes, Japan would make sense. They import all their energy, even the uranium for their nuclear electricity. They look around the world at who controls energy they must buy, and its not a pretty picture.

At least we have energy prospects in abundance. We just need to get going with ALL of them and see what passes muster. We also need to reform our regulatory regime, as it was designed when imported oil cost a fraction of what it does today.

But due to our public's new found interest in this issue ($4 gas has a way of getting your attention), we're beginning to do that, thankfully.

The major concern right now is if the Congress extends their mandate on corn ethanol, and requires gas stations to carry the stuff. We need it where I live in the oil patch like we need a hole in the head.

And that's the problem with involving them in the energy issue in the first place. They will do whatever they can to get re-elected, and the general public welfare be damned, not to mention the money being poured in by corn lobbyists.

And to think all this got started when we decided to bail out a bunch of broke corn farmers. Now they think they own the trough!

Yeah, I go back to Jimmy Carter's prohibition on NG use (you weren't allowed to operate a home BBQ pit with it), when we were supposedly running out. And then we have the successive moratoria imposed by the Prez and Congress on offshore exploration in the OCS (which will expire this Oct. 1 incidentally). Not to mention the ANWR ban. The corn peccadillo is only the most recent of these fiascoes. (But perhaps some good could even come out of that one if we learned to substitute sugar for corn.)

    Blu,

I've done some research on the costs of converting vehicles to run on CNG. Probably about $5,000 installed, I'd venture, not to mention the difficulties inherent in EPA "certification," if required Alot cheaper to get Detroit to build them again, and they'd be "dual-fueled," the best of both worlds.

As for home refueling with the "Phill," that's about another $4K installed, if your home has access to NG. (Taken together, that's about the amount big trucks and SUV's have depreciated due to $4 gasoline.) But, take heart, NGV's are on their ascendancy, and more CNG filling stations are opening every day!

    Dave,

Interesting you said that. Pickens is the majority owner of CLNE. And, according to Cramer, guess who another major investor is? None other than Nancy Pelosi (who shares about as much in common with the Texan as I do the man in the moon). I could have fell off my chair!

    Cajun,

I think we're on the same page, actually. But, if not, that's alright, too.

I do take issue with our government picking the winners and losers in the energy business, though. They have a PERFECT RECORD so far. They are 0-FOR as many times as they've stuck their beaks in!
(Much the same as the rest of their track record in interfering with our economy.)
