Looks like a 30% gain in less than a day on the GOOG long straddle, not bad, probably time to take some profit - winner-winner-chicken-...

  • Protecting Intel [View article]
This was meant for people already in an Intel position, as a way to generate some income and protect their position. I think it could also be a good trade for new investors in the company, especially with the dividend. The 3.6% potential return with 5.8% maximum downside looks pretty good to me.

And, yes there are other trades for other companies, stand by.

  • Amazon: Sales Taxes And Getting Cozy [View article]
Amazon's stock price breached the $244.50 management point, so the position is being rolled to the Nov 220/225 for a net credit of $0.55. Setting new management point for $234.

If position is profitable, then can exit for a profit if desired. If not then can usually roll down and out-in-time for a net credit.

  • Amazon: Sales Taxes And Getting Cozy [View article]
1.Amazon's stock price has retreated almost to the lower Bollinger band.
2.Nice risk/reward ratio, probably won't even have to do any further management, just take the money and run.
3.Not a good idea to be holding a spread during an earnings release.

Well, I did mention that the position could result in a total loss and the conditions for a total loss, not sure how to make it any clearer than that.

  • Apache's Diversification A Big Plus [View article]
Loophole 69, I like to trade married puts and protected covered calls/collars as a way to protect against large drops in stock price. You can view some of my other articles to see how to do it.

  • Apache's Diversification A Big Plus [View article]
As Alvin5007 noted, Apache derives a lot of international revenue from its Egyptian operations. There has been a lot of turmoil in Egypt, so there's a possibility the ruling government could nationalize Apache's assets.

But, as noted in the article, the company is well diversified, so a hit in Egypt won't sink the company, just dent it up a little. Apache has many more wells to drill outside of Egypt, so in the event of Egyptian "issues", the company will recover at some point.

Well, its always better to roll prior to going in the money, but if the stock price were to make a dramatic downward move overnight and go in-the-money, then I would have to evaluate the situation and proceed from there.

Generally, if it moves in-the-money, I would roll down and out and increase the amount of capital invested. Increasing the amount of capital invested enables a roll to be performed for a net credit (usually).

Good point, but the company is large enough and diversified enough to manage the difficulties faced in Egypt. Thanks for the insight.

  • Akamai's Cloud Has A Silver Lining [View article]
Akamai's stock price of $38.46 at expiration on friday was greater than the $32 strike price of the put option, so the position returned 12.9% (90.3% annualized). Winner-winner-chicken-...

In contrast, a long position would have returned 9.1% over the same time period.

  • Bullish On DR Horton [View article]
D.R. Horton's stock price of $21.74 at expiration on friday was greater than the $15 strike price of the short put option, so the position returned 9.9% (78.5% annualized). Winner-winner-chicken-...

In contrast, a long position would have returned 24.3%, but the spread could probably have been rolled several times to realize a greater return.
