  • Dave Van Knapp Positions For 2014: The Best Dividend Growth Stocks Will Pay Out More This Year [View article]
    David,
First, my congratulations for writing a splendid book. Just finished reading "Top 40 Dividend Growth Stocks for 2014".
I have a couple of questions. In your book, on page 203 which lists the 16 stocks in your current portfolio, the first stock, Alliant Energy Corp (LNT) was only 3% of the portfolio. However, in your website, that same stock has risen to 9.99%. So either you have made the additional purchase in the last 3 weeks, or there is some error. But I am more curious to know why you made additional purchases of a stock that no longer figures in your 2014 Top 40 stocks.
I have been an active participant in the financial markets for a long time. But I am finally going to build a Dividend Growth Portfolio, and your work has given me a nice road map. I am going to incorporate my own skill with Elliott Wave Analysis to identify levels on your list of 40 stocks that will give me a good initial yield.
I am toying with the idea of buying CVX as the first stock in my DGP tomorrow, because that will allow me to get their dividend that has an Ex-Div date later this week. However, in the bigger picture, I do see CVX coming down below the $100 level. I give it a high probability for this correction to happen in the next few months. The question then is (a) should one commit some amount right now just in case it takes more than a few weeks for the correction to happen or (b) Is it better to wait for the correction to reach below 100 so that I will have an initial yield of over 4%. I will probably do 50% of my position size on Monday just to make sure I have a finger in the pie!
Once again, my best wishes to you Dave, and all other who have embraced DGP as a better way to prepare for retirement.
P.S. I will submit an article on CVX soon on Seeking Alpha.

Hi Mohit, thanks for the omment. When I wrote the article spot was at 2.21 as you can see from the chart't top left (underlined closing price). The target was the minimum objective for the triangle breakout. It is still not a time to buy!
