To be honest, Wal-mart has always been stingy with individuals, always caring more about profit than about helping their employees. Contrast the way they treat their workers in comparison to Costco. Sure, one company is smaller, but still finds a way to pay their workers desirable rates. Also compare them with companies like Safeway, where the workers are in a union earn FAR higher rates and better benefits.

Wal-mart doesn't provide full-time employees with *any* benefits until after a year of employment. Part time employees have to wait 2 years. I personally know someone who was mysteriously dropped to part time 2 weeks before their first year of employment was over. Then she had to wait another year to receive benefits.

However, on employee benefits, without being paternalistic, the employer (or employment arrangements such as via a credit union, etc.) can provide advantages of "group" buying power (e.g., Employee Paid Group Life Insurance) payroll deductions (to lower costs). Some tax benefits could be devised to cover employer costs of payroll deduction administration; better yet, shift businesses to VAT form from "Income" tax. Taxes only flow through anyway.
But, we all know none of this will happen - until disaster finally strikes, and no other alternatives remain.

By the way, why haven't unions been spending their funds on providing "re-training" and continuing education for members instead of on politics? It's a keystone component of a full media experience, making your HD TV the crowning jewel that it should be.
