Muddling Investor: You may be right about the dividends being eaten up by a rising dollar, and you may not be right. With JEM many of the currencies are at least loosely pegged to the dollar. If they continue with their historical pattern, they will probably follow the dollar up for the most part. But some may not. This isn't the killer you might expect, however, if you remember that your total return is not computed until you sell the ETF. Even if their prices decline with respect to the dollar, your dividend income will be ok. If you continue holding the instruments, the time will come when the dollar will depreciate again and the currencies will regain what they lost. Unless you need the monies at the wrong time, then you can ride out these kinds of variations. But, you must have a long term outlook to make it work.
