  • McDonald's Is Bullish On 2014; Should You Be? [View article]
First of all, their guidance as you call it is worthless. They would say they don't give guidance. The 3-5% sales growth and 5-7% earnings growth are just long term strategic goals in their "Plan to Win" which have been in their annual report every year for the last decade.
Secondly, everyone that writes about the dividend fails to mention that
they are slowing down the rate of increase in the dividend, and last time it was only a 5% increase. They are feeling some pressure.

  • More from McDonald's Investor Meeting [View news story]
Given the reaction of the stock the day of and day after the investor meeting, it seems no one was to impressed with the initiatives outlined.
Also disheartening was the comment to "focus on things we can control", implying that their strategy is to hang in there until the macro improves.

  • The Rising Dividend Is The Only Reason To Buy McDonald's [View article]
The fact that they eliminated their Angus burgers, means they have thrown in the towel in the premium burger market. They have given up and by doing so admit they can't compete with 5 guys, Smash burger, Red Robin etc. The king of burgers can't compete in premium burgers. WOW!

You might be referring to something like this "Notably, we will aggressively pursue growth opportunities in markets with great long-
term potential. China, with 1.3 billion people and a growing economy, is a perfect example" This is a quote from their 2003 annual report.

They say its a bad thing when the generals aren't leading. However, valuation is a bad timing device. Third, many times the largest part of a bull move comes in the last blow off phase.

  • Shares of McDonald's (MCD -0.1%) are back over the $100 mark bringing the question of valuation back onto the radar of some investors concerned about the restaurant operator's soft global sales trends. A quick snapshot look at the sector still shows McDonald's trading at lower forward p-e ratio than peers while generating more cash. Despite the recent runup in share price, McDonald's also boasts a higher dividend yield than Burger King, Yum Brands, Jack in the Box, and Sonic. [View news story]
Valuation should be a concern for a company that had only 2% rev gwth, 1.7% earnings growth last year, and not doing better this year , with negative SSS in Jan and Feb and facing currency headwinds. Who wants to pay almost 19 times trailing earnings for that kind of growth, while forward earning estimates have been on a steady downward path for a year.

  • Recent asset sales (I, II) by Magnum Hunter (MHR +3.9%) and Quicksilver Resources (KWK +2.9%) are just the beginning, as drillers reach a point where their cash flow isn't enough to pay down big debts racked up in the shale land grab. The combined long-term debt for 85 small and midsize U.S. drillers was more than $130B at the end of Q3 2012, according to one estimate. [View news story]
