I wish to stress that DNY is changing its strategy and exploring new areas. Its investment in a hedge fund and in closed end preferred shares are very new. It is in the process of change and management has its own money on the line. I do understand your comments and again reiterate that DNY is intended to be [art of a basket of CEFs

  • EXG Is Failing To Generate The Income It Seeks [View article]
The January phenomenon is well known and well documented. Investors do it with many stocks that have had dismal years, capitalizing on year end tax selling to push prices even lower.

I have more comments, more quickly, on this article than any other. I am so curious about the obvious desire for more current income at the expense of future growth. The whole buy/write approach has to have a basic flaw, as to do it properly you must sacrifice future gains. if you are seeking current income, why not seek a bond or quasi bond fund? It does appear that the buy/write equity funds cannot match the consistency of these bond and quasi bond funds.

Please do not confuse payout with net investment income. I never refer to payout. If you read any of my previous articles, you will see that I am not a fan of managed dividend programs

I would hesitate to short this fund as in truth, they have a fairly dull but safe portfolio and should be able to perform in accordance with the averages. The discounts have greatly widened this year and I suspect they are reaching their limits.

I find it had to believe that you regard this article as a recommendation. I simply thought that I laid out the facts. They have done poorly and it is cheap. There is no guaranty that they will do better. In point of fact, i find most by/write programs ineffectual as you are selling the future for small change.

  • Closed-End Fund Opportunities: A Look at Royce Funds [View article]
I see your figures and understand them. In truth, I cannot bring myself to invest in indexes even if they have better performance. I believe deep in my heart that kniowledge does have value, I am aware of MPT theory and the arguements against my belief. I am just more comfortable having my funds with an entity that has research capabilities and not simply rely on the randomness of the market.

FUND is really different than RMT. They do own larger cap stocks and use a rifle rather than shotgun approach.

    Please be advised:
    1. CEFs are sold not bought.
    2. They lack true liquidity so accumulations are difficult
    3. Buying shares to reduce the discount is not in the best interest of management.
    4. An investor must learn to use the discount for his advantage.
