  • Annaly Capital gets new CFO [View news story]
eltito, don't make the mistake of looking at your purchase price when making a decision. The correct decision (in addition to taking tax issues into account) is whether you would want to buy NLY at this price or is there a better place for your money. I am not giving an opinion but forward performance is the only thing that matters, not how much you may be behind...

  • Think Before You Leap Into Muni Closed-End Funds [View article]
In your article you mentioned UNII but you didn't provide any of that data for the five funds you highlighted?

  • SPY To Stall: Jobs Report Sends Warning Signals [View article]
But the title of your article was SPY to stall. Additionally, the drop in the unemployment rate was primarily due to the drop in labor force participation. Even fed comments suggested that the rate itself is not the final arbiter of policy.

  • SPY To Stall: Jobs Report Sends Warning Signals [View article]
A weak jobs market bodes well for continued QE which is pushing the markets higher. Wouldn't you think that weaker jobs data gives support to continued QE and high equity prices?

  • Performant Financial: Solid Play On Student Loan Defaults [View article]
You should take a look at the financials for both collection agencies and debt purchasing firms and you can get a pretty good idea.

  • Performant Financial: Solid Play On Student Loan Defaults [View article]
It's true that a growing student loan problem will likely led to increased business for Performant. Have you looked into their cost to collect? It would also seem likely that as college graduates have difficulty finding jobs that the ability of debtors to pay, and conversely the cost to collect, will increase. This could negatively impact profit margins...

  • The iShares Muni Bond ETF (MUB +0.1%) opens with a slight gain as does the High Yield Muni ETF (HYD +0.2%) following last night's Chapter 9 filing by Detroit. "The situation in Detroit (is) a Michigan issue and not a broader muni market issue," opined BlackRock two weeks ago in anticipation of the filing. Other names of interest: MBIA (MBI -1.7%), Assured Guaranty (AGO -1.9%), Ambac (AMBC -2.4%). [View news story]
Funny how that seems to work. Not trying to make a political statement but it is interesting that Democratic locales seem to be disproportionately represented in local bankruptcies...

  • Markets are overlooking the "dovish" signals in Bernanke's press conference, tweets the WSJ, previewing a Jon Hilsenrath article. The Dow (DIA -0.2%) reverses a moderate loss and is now back to about flat. [View news story]
Correct, nothing has changed but no one thinks this will continue forever and the spigot will be turned off at some point after it is slowly lessened. Has to happen.

  • A New 8% Yielder Paying Every Month [View article]
An MREIT, now there's a safe investment! Some of them are leveraged 10 times and you call that safe. There is very little equity to protect the common should things go wrong (i.e. higher interest rates). You only get higher yield for higher risk, period. The MREITs yield more than this preferred and I believe the risk is commensurate with that yield. Tread carefully in MREIT world.

  • The smart money appears to be still long GameStop (GME +3.2%), according to the hedge fund trackers at Insider Monkey. The stock was held in 26 of the bigger funds tracked at the end of Q1, an increase from the end of the year despite the growing consternation over the used game business model. [View news story]
I am surprised to see this comment. The Microsoft announcement came after the reporting date for the 13F reports. After that report, funds could have sold their positions in reaction. To suggest that the funds are long even in light of the Microsoft announcement regarding the new XBox and how it deals with used games is simply misleading. This post should be retracted.
