  • Pennsylvania governor proposes new tax on nat gas extraction [View news story]
Regardless of where you stand on the issue (Left, Right, Center) the point made is the truth that the citizens will be both the major payer as well as beneficiary of the tax. Whether that tax goes to help people that need it, into the pockets of the corporations that are out of the State, or into politician's and their supporters pockets; becomes the only question. If no tax is imposed then the locals will not see a higher price for the goods nor any positive possible outcome from more money into the State. If the tax is imposed then there is a chance that the overall State will see some positive benefit. The misuse of the instrument lies in the hands of the politicians as it always has and will continue so long as the voters allow them to do so.

No, I am not arguing for either side here either, as I see this issue as fairly neutral economically speaking when we are faced with a local tax vs. an out of State corp. To be fair, the vast majority of the NG E&P groups in the area are not from PA so the bulk of any tax/profit is no longer applicable to this argument.

  • Crude oil soars nearly 8% [View news story]
In this market environment you never can tell the short duration movements. Could be algorithmic, could be short covering, could be some sector grabbing up supply. Who knows. Does not matter in the long run unless you are spec. short terms. Just wish it would find a floor and stick to it!

  • Cheniere gets FERC clearance for Corpus Christi gas export plant [View news story]
The more I run the numbers the more I am convinced that this will be a great opportunity. Just need to find an entry point and hang on for the ride. I suspect it will get rather bumpy at first and settle out from there.

I think the longer term question is Can they capitalize significantly on it or merely pay themselves back for the investment? If the later is true then they will simply be creating a market for the other players for free on both sides. Regardless, it is a net win, but I'm not certain they will be a great investment or just a good one. I've held back from buying LNG since Cooperman mentioned it.

I'm waiting on the US subsidy program to kick in to balance the high price of oil so the solar and renewable stocks will come back up. (tongue in cheek here folks)

Nope, you just got to the table late. Those of us that have been doing this a while did not see this sector like the rest of the market and were in a long while ago, I've been zero'd out by dividend for a while so both the dividend and the security price are free money at this point.

Oh dear! Get the foil out, next thing you know you'll be accusing N. Korea of the same thing. I do agree this is all a power play on Russia's part, but calling it manipulation of the market is just silly.

  • Keurig Details Are Not Released: SodaStream Should Continue To Dominate The Home Soda Market [View article]
The 12oz soda is the most appropriate measure as it is the least expensive as well as the most common home use item. The 20oz and 1L bottles are targeted at convenience stores, not home. As well they cost more than the cans do when compared price per oz. If you bring in the sales cost of the 20oz and 1L bottles the cost of the competition increases thus making SS an even better deal. Co-branded items are roughly similar in cost to the Name brands that co-own them. The same is true for SS as well, the co-branded flavors are priced similar to the SS generic flavors.

  • Negative rates not the end of moves for the ECB [View news story]
No, I agree with Gary's statement on its face. Often people confuse the shift in money and look at it in too narrow a focus. He does not separate out the issues most of Africa faces, which Bud points out. Both are correct in my est.

The cure for such rampant sociopolitical issues is so multifaceted that I cannot even begin to correct them. Much of MENA faces the same issues, corruption supported by citizens kept unaware to hold power in place. Just had this conversation this morning with a now US Cit. who's parents came over from N.A. for a visit.
