  • Coca-Cola: Underperforming, Possibly For Good Reasons [View article]
Good analysis on Coke, but terrible ideas thereafter. Sell KO when it goes BELOW $36? That's a buy signal in my book, it seems like you are an active trader. KO is for a long-term investor. I know if KO drops to below $36 I will, at the very least, increase my holding at least 10-20%.

Buy low and sell high, seems like you got that mixed up.

  • Why It's Time To Sell McDonald's Shares Now And Buy On The Next Major Pullback [View article]
Stock is currently trading at 12x FY16 earnings. I'll be collecting over $1 a quarter in dividends per share then why you may still be waiting to buy again. How about HOLD shares, and buy MORE on dips?

  • Well Hedged, 9.44% Dividend Payer BreitBurn Energy Partners Is A Safe Haven [View article]
    David,
Forgive me if my previous response came across as crass on the stock, and please understand I meant nothing against you. It is hard to reprogram myself into thinking that a company with no shareholders equity and terrible ROE and ROA is similar to another company with great traditional metrics just because it is an MLP. Perhaps this is why I don't invest in MLP's.

My response was arrogant and haste and I apologize.

If I don't understand something I should just keep my mouth shut huh?? My grandfather always told me, "it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

  • Do Dividends Matter? [View article]
You failed to mention that Buffet's top 10+ holdings pay a dividend quarterly. Even he knows dividend's matter.

  • Well Hedged, 9.44% Dividend Payer BreitBurn Energy Partners Is A Safe Haven [View article]
One look at Morningstar's "key ratios" tab shows that this stock is a terrible investment. Unstable and shrinking margins, 3 years of negative ROE since 2007 and the dramatic changing float count each year is a complete turnoff. The yield is 10%, but the company is paying out $1.80 per share this year, and their earnings this year are $-.94, this looks pretty sustainable to me right?!?!?!

This company has negative EBT margins too!! Talk about great hedging.

What a joke of an investment. Best of luck to you with this trash company.

  • The Oil Spill Settlement Could Bring BP To Its Knees [View article]
Specialist, how can anyone take this article seriously when your opening sentence, your thesis is incorrect? Not only is this not the worst man-made disaster in history, its not the worst oil spill. Deepwater Horizon spilled roughly 4 or 5 MILLION barrels of oil. The oil fires in Kuwait totaled over 1.5 BILLION barrels of oil during the Persian Gulf War. Not to mention nuclear meltdowns and atomic bombs.

I don't have the time to go into how your numbers are wrong for the damages being sought against BP. You write how a politician talks. Distorted facts with an agenda. I wouldn't be surprised if you were short BP.

Below is an article about BP that is much better and accurate than this.

  • The Role Of BP's Dividend In Preserving Your Wealth Over The Medium Term [View article]
This will be a bump in the road for long-term holders, and $40 will be a great entry point . If BP is found gross negligent, I will add substantially to my holding after the stock tanks again. Book value is $37/share, same as XOM. Would you like to buy XOM at $40/share today? Here is your chance to buy XOM of the U.K.

Remember that just because we hear so much in America about BP, that it is not an American company, its based in the U.K., and the European Union is in shambles, which effects BP as well. When Europe recovers, BP will be a shining star once again. Will it be next year? 5 years? Who knows, just enjoy the dividends while you wait.

And don't forget that BP will own 20% of Rosneft, which we will be hearing ALOT more about in the coming years as it may eclipse XOM in market cap. BP is a terrific long-term investment @$40/share.

  • Does Entry Point Matter To A Dividend Growth Investor? [View article]
Entry point always matters. If you pick up a stock at $10/share and the next week I buy the same stock at $15/share my returns will ALWAYS be half of what your returns are. If we both sell the stock in 25 years your returns will be exactly 50% higher than mine, cet par.

I'm 25 and have more than 75% (I know this is high, I just sold some winners that have run up 20% this year) of my portfolio in cash for prices to drop so I can boost my returns significantly in the long run. I may only be able to pick up an extra 100 shares by waiting a year for a stock to go from say $90 to $70 but long-term those 100 shares will be producing dividends that far outweighs the several dividend checks I missed waiting for a price correction.

Cranky, I'm not sure I understand. I don't think I am trying to outsmart the market, I am picking the best companies and adding them to my portfolio subject to my own funds and their 52-week range.

I love big oil! Oil is the best commercial energy source the world has ever known. A ball of oil the size of your fist can propel a 3,000 lb. vehicle 10 miles up a small grade. The world will always need it until we figure out how to commercialize nuclear power.

  • Dave Van Knapp Positions For 2013: Tuning Out Market 'Noise' With Dividend Growth Investing [View article]
DVK, I often follow your articles and read alot of your comments. I am 25 and I am a DG investor for 3 years. If you were my age would you focus more on stocks that have higher earnings growth (ie. V, MA) with very small and rising yields, or would you find yourself better off with the lower growth/higher dividend stocks like JNJ?

  • The Myth Of Dividends [View article]
Tech dividends are semi-speculative at best, which is why your article works. Please rewrite the same article and use JNJ, PG, KO, MO instead. Can't write that can you? Cherry picking tech stocks doesn't make your point absolute.
