  • Should You Consider Walgreen For The Trifecta? [View article]
I believe that Walgreens has the legs to run. There is no question in my mind that they are going to continue to grow. I am long WAG and believe in the company. I see only a bright future going forward.

I never claimed that the company was irrelevant. Just that they are hitting some roadblocks.

MCD is part of the fast food industry. If the industry is having to adapt or change, then MCD would be part of that.

The Dow was up 400+ points on Thursday. Naturally MCD would be up as well. A strong market tends to carry most stocks higher with it, regardless of if they deserve to climb or not.

As the largest generation in the history of the country, millennials are highly sought after. Price points are very important to millennials, and MCD used to at least be reliable for that. However, as mentioned in the article, they are making critical errors such as trying to sell chicken at too high a price point and getting caught with excess inventory on their hands.

So people eating more at home is irrelevant to the fast food industry? If that is outlook that the people at MCD have then this company could be in worse shape than I thought.

I never mention Chipotle in the article, not even once. Millennials are as a group making healthier food choices in general and abandoning McDonald's in large numbers. That's what the studies are showing.

When we talk about $5.44 estimates for next year and if they will be met or not, we should remember that this year's estimates were not even met. MCD has missed its earnings estimates for the last three quarters. The last miss was by an amazing 20%.

So no, this isn't about the fact that the stock has hit near the 52 week low that I believe it is going lower. It is because of demographic trends and earnings stumbles.

My thesis was in part about millennials going for healthier food options yes. However, as I have mentioned, obviously "healthier" is a very flexible term here. We are talking about a nation that consumes ungodly amounts of sugar, salt, and calories on average on a daily basis.

Even if Chipotle is doing better than MCD at the moment, this does not negate the fact that both chains could suffer from people making wiser decisions about food. I believe the perception of Chipotle is healthier even if it may not be. There is a disconnect between perception and reality here, but that doesn't particularly matter in business. It means that millennial's dollars are going somewhere other than MCD.

Fast food consumption for millennials as a whole is starting to falter. The remaining fast food eating done by millennials is being shifted to places other than MCD. There may be some temporary winners in the fast food space (such as Chipotle), but overall the industry is having to adapt to new tastes.

The obesity numbers are based on an outdated BMI model that was originally intended to be used for the military.

Human beings are also taller on average than they were 50 years ago, however no one seems to account for this in the obesity numbers that are all too often cited. I would argue that the definition of "average" weight needs to be redefined.

Aside from that, factors other than diet can account for one's weight. Less active lifestyles for one thing can contribute. Besides, I said that millennials are making "healthier" food choices, not that every choice that they make is healthy. Most dietitians would argue that eating at fast food restaurants at all is not healthy, however we know that people of all age groups are going to eat at these restaurants at least some of the time. They are simply reducing the number of trips that they make to certain establishments.

I am using my brain. Just because someone comes to a different conclusion than you does not mean that they have no put thought into their point of view.

The organic and fresh food movements have gained a lot of their steam from millennials. The studies are in showing that millennials are leaving MCD. Where they are going for food is less relevant to the stock price than the fact that they are leaving MCD.

You may disagree with it, but the verdict from millennials at the moment is that McDonalds does not offer a quality burger at a nice price, at least not the quality they are looking for during this time. US sales have been flat and the company has missed earnings expectations for the last three quarters.

What's important to me is providing an accurate report of how I see a particular stock trading. My basis for the claim is provided right in the article. The study that shows that millennials are decreasing their visits to McDonalds in large numbers. There are a number of reasons for this, not the least of which is because healthier options exist.

Measuring the habits of generations has proven to be a very effective way of studying generations trends and shifts and can provide a lot of insight into the markets. It is unfortunate that you totally disregard these studies.
