  • Just One ETF: Safe-Haven Concerns Favor Gold Producers, Inflation or Not [View article]
    Ellen,
Thank you for highlighting this story. It is indeed intriguing, and will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

At first glance, it brings to mind several questions for me:

1.Why the lack of transparency in this transaction; especially at a time of growing skepticism about the condition of the financial system?

2.As reported in the Wall Street Journal article “The swaps are backed by gold held at central banks.” Was this a way to covertly “bail out” some systemically important financial institutions?

3.What will be the commerical bank’s intended use of the funds?

4.Is this an attempt to “paper over” and contain a growing systemic solvency crisis?

5.Will the funding from this transaction be sufficient to contain the presumable institutional damage?

6.If not, what is the potential fallout? How far does it reach?

7.Is this an implicit official acknowledgement of gold as the global standard of asset value?

    Lisa,

I'm not as familiar with PHYS as with GLD. My understanding is that a selling point of PHYS is that an investor can take possession of physical gold if they so choose. As to the popularity, if measured by trading volume, PHYS trades a little over 1 million shares per day, while GLD is around 18 million. I'm not necessarily, however, suggesting that popularity is, or should be, a significant factor in good investment decision making.

    Jeff,

For clarification, my view towards GLD is also bullish. The intent of the article, however, was to just select one position.

    Venerability,

Thank you for your link. I did go and read your post. Your key point about disinformation is one of the major challenges we face in sorting through the events and agendas of various players in order to try to come to some conclusion about what is really going on. It is a deep strategic process, like a multi-dimensional game of chess.

I agree with the Shaftsinkers comment on the credit crunch residual problems, although I have no real problem with the juniors, or other precious metal positions. The question really comes down to how the choice fits into your ioverall nvestment strategy and the rest of your portfolio.
