The images are new, as the NDTV article notes. They stem from a Twitter source:

  • Qualcomm buys power amplifier vendor Black Sand [View news story]
Of course. But I think there's little risk of creating a monopoly here. The competition won't disappear.

  • Qualcomm buys power amplifier vendor Black Sand [View news story]
Design wins take time to ramp. QCOM released its first Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip in 2011, but it's only over the last year that the business has really begun to pressure BRCM (the market leader). And QCOM hasn't been able to claim a performance edge in that space, whereas they at least partly can with their RF front end.

I don't think OEMs are worried about becoming more dependent on QCOM. They already buy the company's transceivers, PMICs, and (now) combo chips to go with their basebands. Adding RF front ends to the list doesn't change things a lot, as long as QCOM still has credible competition (which they certainly will).

Agree the Black Sand deal isn't a game-changer. But it does signal that QCOM is serious about growing its PA presence.

SWKS, TQNT, and RFMD were all down over 10% the day of the announcement. Not an everyday event.

  • Apple roundup: iPhone 6 production, Touch ID, OIS [View news story]
The 5S has digital (electronic) image stabilization, not optical. Optical requires sensors built into the device.

  • Reuters: iWatch likely to have 2.5" display, enter production in July [View news story]
There's a big difference between "speculation" (i.e. just idly guessing what a product will be like) and a media report backed by sources. Reuters' article is the latter.

It's possible the sources aren't 100% accurate, but Reuters has a good track record overall. Either way, they're doing more than speculating.

  • Facebook (yes, Facebook) challenges Cisco with open-source switch [View news story]
Facebook isn't looking to build the switch for anything besides internal use. But they plan to open-source the design, so that switch OEMs can use it (and modify it if they want). That's the competitive threat to Cisco and other vendors with proprietary designs.

  • Report: Shipments of AMD/Nvidia graphics cards hit by high inventories [View news story]
It wasn't announced in April. The timestamp for the Digitimes piece is today (June 16). And the prior story being mentioned was about a 10-20% drop, not a 30-40% drop.

  • Report: Shipments of AMD/Nvidia graphics cards hit by high inventories [View news story]
Many of the top graphics card OEMs (PowerColor, MSI, Asus, etc.) are based out of Taiwan. I'm guessing Digitimes has sources at some of them.

Thing to keep in mind is that shipments aren't the same as end-user demand. Just because shipments might fall sharply Q/Q due to an inventory crunch doesn't mean user consumption is falling by a similar amount.

Pandora is actually up to 1M now. But either way, sheer numbers matter less than a catalog's quality.

True. Once the BOM comes down enough (getting there) and the software/services ecosystem evolves, there are all kinds of use cases.

There weren't any reports of a planned sale last year, though (as noted) the WSJ did have reports out earlier this year about the business being on the block. Bloomberg's report is new.
