WhatsApp's engagement is pretty high, in part because a lot of its users rely on it as an SMS replacement. As of early 2014, 72% of its MAUs were DAUs.

  • KLA-Tencor paying $16.50/share dividend; shares +15.2% AH [View news story]
No official date yet. From's KLA's earnings release:

"Subject to the close of necessary financing, the Board of Directors currently intends to declare and pay the special cash dividend before December 31, 2014. The special cash dividend would be in addition to the Company's regular $0.50 per share quarterly cash dividend. The Company's regular $0.50 per share quarterly cash dividend is expected to be declared and paid following the Company's regularly scheduled Board of Directors meeting in November 2014."

Yes, I know. I covered them. Technically, the upgrades were over the last three months, not two.

  • Apple's CC: iPhone inventories, iPad sales, forex, App Store discussed [View news story]
I can see the logic in that. My thinking was that the Mac's performance was already noted in the prior two posts, whereas the other stuff (inventories, forex, Cook's thoughts on the iPad) wasn't.

Sorry that you think it's negative. I'd say there's a decent amount of positive stuff in there as well, as in the post that preceded it.

  • White House nominates ex-Google patent counsel to head USPTO [View news story]
I think the nomination of someone who was the chief patent lawyer for a company that advocated (and continues to advocate) strongly for curtailing the reach of software patents to run the USPTO matters to any company whose business depends heavily on the USPTO granting software patent applications and/or affirming existing patents that have been challenged.

I also think the nomination carries additional importance when it comes from an administration that (through both actions and words) has signaled it wants to overhaul the U.S. patent system.

    Your mileage may vary.

  • Telecom equipment/component stocks rally following Adtran's earnings [View news story]
I think it was due to expectations for industry Q4 sales already being quite low, along with some cautious optimism about a 2015 pickup. If industry names were still at their June levels, the reaction probably would've been different.

"Alas, if you were hoping for another shockingly-cheap Nexus handset… not so much, this time around. Whereas the Nexus 5 started at $349 off contract, this new addition to the lineup will start at $649."

  • Intel talks server demand and mobile profits on CC; AMD and MU higher [View news story]
I never said they have visibility into business trends for every company in the sector, just the sector in general. I also acknowledged that there were areas, such as mobile and PCs, where their visibility might be limited.

Intel's numbers suggest that they aren't being affected by the issues Microchip is facing. Linear's numbers suggest that they are. Earnings season has a ways to go.

  • Skyworks +9.1% on FQ4 guidance hike; peers also gain [View news story]
We also mentioned that Microchip had relatively low mobile exposure, and that the one company to positively pre-announce (SIMO) had a lot of it.

Anyway, SWKS' guidance is for calendar Q3, not Q4 (the focus of the recent fears about a correction). There's still a lot to be revealed during earnings season.

  • Chip stocks continue plunge as analysts buy into Microchip's outlook [View news story]
Russ, you seem to have ignored the argument made in my last post, which is that there are examples of Microchip being a leading indicator of chip industry corrections and recoveries, and that the most recent one happened two years ago.

As for Microchip's chart tracking the SOXX, I think that arguably does more to back up my point than refute it. Markets anticipate business and economic trends in advance. The SOXX will start falling before an industry correction arrives, and begin rallying before it ends. Just as the S&P will fall before a recession arrives, and rally before a recovery begins.

If Microchip's most recent forecast proves accurate, then the dive the SOXX took on Friday in sympathy with Microchip would be another example of this.

  • Chip stocks continue plunge as analysts buy into Microchip's outlook [View news story]
Russ, a lot has changed since Microchip's IPO way back in '93. A Google search for the terms Microchip and "canary in the coal mine" yields 113,000 results.

    http://bit.ly/1vkWxxF

Their reputation for predicting the start and end of industry corrections is very well-known. The analysts who bought into Microchip's view aren't ignorant about the industry, nor are the fund managers who sold.

"Eric, I would like to see an example of a decline or increase in Microchip business that preceded a decline or increase in the general semi business."

With all due respect, did you read the above post? It quotes Covello explaining how Microchip did just that in the fall of 2012 (far from the first time).

"The last time Microchip negatively preannounced was October 15, 2012 (3% sales miss). Between October 1 and December 31, Street 2013 sales estimates for the Semi group were revised down 6% on average."
