  • Avoid Paying Taxes The Warren Buffett Way [View article]
lobachevsky, if only the government had kept spending increases in line with the 4.13% inflation rate you cited. That way, the government would not be spending $3.8T annually, most of which goes to entitlement payments.

Steven, WRT borrowing a leaf from the likes of Norway and Sweden, does this mean that the US will have the demographic profile of those countries? Will the US be able to drill for oil and gas like Norway does?

PSalerno, as long as Berkshire doesn't sell appreciated stocks and maintains its property, plant and equipment at current levels or higher then it won't have to pay those deferred taxes.

The value of the deferred tax liabilities is based on the fact that Berkshire doesn't have to pay them until it wants to and that it can utilize the funds for investment purposes instead of current tax payments.

"Neither the author, not anyone else, has shown that Berkshire does not pay all applicable taxes, in full, when due. "

The New York Post, The Blaze and even the Huffing and Puffington Post have already covered Berkshire's back taxes.

" In these cases, the company has sometimes withheld disputed amounts until the issue is resolved, or payment is required by law. "
We've already analyzed and evaluated this.

"In points 6 and 7, the author double-counts taxes that would hypothetically be due. On a person's death, assets are subject to "estate" taxes, but capital gains taxes are wiped out - cost basis is stepped up to the value on the date of death. "
If Buffett and Uelstchi followed their Tax Me More Mantra, they would have sold their shares while they were alive which would result in capital gains taxes coming due. If they did not arrange to donate their proceeds to their favored charities, their estates would be liable for estate taxes due.

We have no problem with their tax avoidance strategies. That's good planning. We only wish that Buffett and his followers wouldn't be combining it with sanctimonious, self-righteous Tax Me More Rhetoric so they can have a sound bite.

We disagree with your assessment of our report and so does Seeking Alpha.

You may have missed where we pointed out that Berkshire's tax avoidance strategies represent about 25% of its market value and that is but one of many reasons why we own it and recommend it.

Ted, government spends too much money at all levels. Our opposition to higher taxes is based on Warren Buffett's quote about how he thinks the charities run by his friends and family "will do a better job with lower administrative costs and better selection of beneficiaries than the government."

Being that you were a credit analyst for about 10 years, you are aware that the federal government has increased spending in 48 out of the last 50 fiscal years and that spending has increased at a compounded average annual growth rate of 7.4%, right? You are aware that entitlements and other transfers of income are over 60% of the federal budget, right?

We don't like how the terms of the SoftBank-Sprint combination limit the near term upside, but we love Sprint once the deal closes.

Thank you Thomas. Although we believe that Sprint will generate better fundamental performance relative to the companies we've analyzed and evaluated, we have kept our eyes on ALU, NOK, RIMM and even FRP.

  • Cerberus Thinks Supervalu Is A Super Value [View article]
    Adam, its Saibus, not Salibus.

Anyway, we have experience in the retail industry, we believe that it is in need of consolidation and we believe that SVU needs to be taken out in order for the rest of its competition to better compete against Wal-Mart/Target instead of each other.

As far as real estate that SVU owns, it owns 40% of its traditional retail stores (excluding Save-A-Lot operations).

  • Duke Energy CEO James Rogers' Retirement Is Addition By Subtraction [View article]
Because Rogers's departure eliminates a huge hole in the CEO's Office, we're going to be taking a second look at Duke Energy. Maybe Duke Energy in 2014 will be the Wisconsin Energy of 2003, or maybe it is too big and too bloated.
