    Tesla employees are very happy as far as I know, I see their enthusiastic twitter updates, fbook posts, etc. Plus a friend of mine has a cousin that works there as an engineer. He loves it there and can't stop talking about how down to earth Musk is, how he attends meetings with everybody, etc.

    Let them decide whatever they want to do, it's non of our businesses.

    Elon alone owns about 30% of Tesla and he mentioned many times he has no intention of selling the company, especially before producing a mass market car. This guy borrowed money for rent during 2008 crisis, he worked day and night for many years for this company (and SpaceX) to succeed. Do you really think he doesn't see its potential and will allow a buy out?

    No chance.

    Hi Chris,

    I'm not a Ford expert but quickly looking at the income statement, I can see their profit margin is at 4.4% (Tesla guidance is for ~10% for 2013 and it should increase significantly with production increase / economies of scale.

    Also Ford has a P/E of 9
    I have Tesla at 40 for at least 5 years (this is actually pretty conservative compared to FB with P/E of 1900, LNKD with 900, AMZN 3000+ :)

    So the profit margin is 2 to 3 times higher than Ford and P/E is estimated at 4 times higher than Ford, meaning 8 to 12 times more valuation.

    Thanks Zelaza, I actually like doing things myself so here's a quick calculation I did for our buddy Tdot above;

    1.7×10^15 KWH
    Total energy from the Sun that strikes the face of the Earth EACH SECOND

    153×10^12 KWH
    (Annual) World Energy Consumption

    So the solar power that hits the world IN A SECOND is about 10^3 (1,000) times MORE THAN GLOBAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN 1 YEAR.

    And since there are 3.15× 10^7 seconds in a year,

    I think we'll be just fine :)

    Hi Tdot, are we talking about the same sun?

    Lucky you Todd, it's an amazing car. I've been living in NY for 7 years so I don't need one but it will definitely be my car when I move to San Francisco later this year.

    I'm actually amazed by how many of these jokers are lazy enough not to visit a store, at least sit in the parked car before writing article after article. But you can't change some people and it's ok, we're making extra money thanks to these "short" sighted people :)

    Hi Old Wizard,

    You're claiming I'm cheer leading while I harshly criticized Tesla one paragraph below the one you mentioned, but it's ok, you can think that way.

    Now, let me explain why Tesla's "leasing" model is amazing;

    When you lease one of the cars below, you pay around $1250 / month. With other cars, you HAVE TO RETURN THE CAR AFTER 3 YEARS.

    But with Tesla, YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO KEEP IT after 3 years THUS YOU ARE BUILDING EQUITY THE WHOLE TIME.

    Get it?

    Here are so called "better value, better performance" German cars vs American Tesla Model S price and stats comparison by KBB, also link further below.
    (Don't forget to look back up at the article for gas savings and maintenance savings (including the unlimited, unconditional warranty on the battery)

    2013 BMW M5 MSRP $92,095 (14MPG)
    4 Year/50,000 Miles Warranty

    2013 Tesla Model S 85kWh Performance MSRP $87,400 (89 MPG)

    Like I was pointing to another commenter above,

    You're missing out on a lot of profits by judging a stock by your "taste", not consumers. You might think Model S isn't worth the money, but many people do.

    Thanks Doc,
    I was just saying SEC probes don't really have any long term impact to profits/share price as long as it isn't the CEO or someone crucial in the company. There will definitely be some short term shock but for long term investors like us, it's basically nothing.

    (By the way, only Tesla CFO and Elon's cousing Kimbal (director) sold shares in the last 30 days)

    I think we're prematurely worrying about GEN III production.
    Let's see the global demand, production efficiency and profit margin improvements for Model S and its "twin-like brother" Model X and then we can worry about GEN III production.

    I just think GEN III should be deep in R&D and testing now and production planning should be adjusted based on S and X sales.

    Here's the link to SolarCity's pricing and details. Simply put; they install everything for free and guarantee that your electricity bill will be less than your current utility bill for 20 years. Panels also have a 30+ year warranty.
