  • Microsoft Or RIM? Why There Is Only Room For One More Mobile Operating System [View article]
A niche player, fine , but not a mass market success some investors are hoping to see. We agree on that point. I did mention Solaris, an OS that has carved itself a server niche and survived.
But, it is not a success by any measure of installed users.

  • Intel's Big Buyback Will Roast The Bears [View article]
The bond guys only care that intel will not go bankrupt. The stock investors care about capital growth. With no growth, intel wil not go bankrupt. But it will see P/E compression. Bond holders, as senior owners of the business cash flow could care less. Hence the dichotomy and share buy back arbitrage.

I was joking about being poor. If it means not being a billionaire then count me poor.

Its called the Surface effect. We all agree it is the coolest msft computer in our house, yet it is also the slowest.

  • Nvidia: The Shorts Have It Wrong [View article]
Ashraf, experience has taught me something, and that is if the market knows your arguments and Mr Weinberg(who had a pro article recently under NVDA) but NVDA trades at a large discount then something must be up.
In any case, 3.5% short means nvidia is not dirt cheap. I nearly got burned in MRVL using this strategy of large cash is great.
28% short, with new product launches, and ...... AMD is dirt cheap.
Speculatively I would play AMD not NVDA. Long term NVDA should be ok if you are looking for income. At the moment the growth story and the revenue decline story makes the stock a low growth one. Meaning a hold until more concrete results for 2013 are available.

actually likely Ashraf, graphics don't sell. Not the IGP variety. Otherwise AMD already has better graphics, why wait for Kabini?
However it cannot easily outsell intel though holding market share is pretty good in the retail channel.

Agreed in terms of at some point too many apps are no longer an advantage. which is why windows phone is not at a huge disadvantage, except i miss oovoo ( check it out for free video conferencing multi users) on andriod. It is not available on windows phone, yet.
However, what is wrong with the comparison ? Laptops, tablets, desktops and smartphones nowadays are all just very powerful personal computers. Writing software on smartphones is no different that writing software for PCs.

I like the thesis, my concern would be investment funds. As soon as intel decides to buy they would sell, thus reducing any element of potential rises. I hold a small position, but plan to add if it drops back to 19. I like the niche market growth plans.

It still lives thanks to msft coffers. You can buy windows ce for business niches much like blackberry. windowsphone 7 is based on a ce derivative. Windows phone 8 is based on the NT kernel. Hence Windows Phone 8 is fundamentally different. App compatibility is because of the use of a Java like technology , based on c#. Look with microsoft, they have been in mobiles for 12 years. Not much to show for it in terms of profits yet, but just like gaming consoles they can dominate. They are perennial innovators, but many of their innovations come too soon for the market at large to accept.

banks ( wealthy employees) who i indirectly work for, are filled with, iphones, andriods and Lumias in that order. In it windows phone representation is much larger than in the population at large.

I got burned in mrvl and decided to quit after i tried to follow einhorn.
I bought speculatively before last results. My concerns are: mrvl had a head start to qcom in arm by purchasing rights to intel's propriotory xacale, strong arm design. Why is mrvl now behind qcom in terms of ARM cpu performance? This indicates weak execution, r&d.

  • More on Nokia: Liberum Capital claims the Lumia 920 is back in stock in many channels where supplies had run out, and is available for shipping within 24 hours on Amazon. The firm thinks Nokia received orders for ~2.5M Lumia 920 units as of the third week of November, and believes Q4 920 shipments will likely exceed its current forecast of 3M. 2M sales of other Lumia models are also expected, and Q1 demand is seen holding steady. Those numbers could be going over well in light of the downbeat assessments provided by other analysts. [View news story]
I will buy back when i see the numbers. But i got my phone before January.
