I'm with you Andrew, and have had similar discussions with Andrew O. in the past. Storage is still cheaper than bandwidth, so edge caching will out.
I'd point out that while overall growth may be slowing, we're still relatively constrained at the edges, in my view. Whether there's a business case for the telecablecos to build out there is another matter.
And @fabrizio, Metcalf's Law on network value doesn't hold for telcos, since the real value accrues to the users (via their connectivity with each other). The typical telecableco business model is still largely a media push, which doesn't piggyback on this connectivity.
