Hello dieuwer, gross-debt-to-income was sourced from Eurostat, and given that income has been relatively flat, the net debt increase will be very close to the gross-debt-to-income increase.

You raise good points seastar5, there are costs as well as benefits to employment laws that make it more difficult to fire people. Taking a page from Nassim Taleb, what I'd seek in structuring the ideal unemployment laws is a system that can adjust quickly to black swan type macroeconomic shifts, allowing human capital to rapidly move where it is in demand enabling the standard of living to recover faster.

I see rigid labor laws inhibiting this process, but agree that the system in the states is far from ideal, especially after paying for the welfare bureaucracy, etc.

Good points Yorick, I agree, the country and the companies that operate in a country are two different matters.

Thank you for the insights Matthew, that does provide a better picture as to how unemployment in the Netherlands works. I read government websites for that portion of the article and I agree it came off as fairly ridged, which was surprising because you didn't get that sense talking to locals.

Hello chkm8k2, appreciate the compliment and I happened to have vacationed in St. Maartens one winter, your friend knows where to live, haha.

The river cruise is with Viking Cruises, not sure the name of the ship, but it is very nice and I believe they use the same boat each time. The only thing to keep in mind is that majority of the passengers are around 70.

Below is a link to the specific tour I'm on.

    The response from Eurostat:

We have checked the tables and we do not see any divergence between our published data and the Danish ones at the link provided. There are sporadic differences likely due to different rounding criteria. Maybe the user is confused with the fact that the data from Statistics DK are non-seasonally adjusted, while the default table in Eurobase shows the seasonally adjusted data.

Thank you Phill. I'm touring 2 cities on my own, Copenhagen and Malmo in Sweden, then taking a river cruise up the Rhine to visit 15 more cities with Viking Cruises. Below is a link to the itinerary:

The tour visits Amsterdam (where I am now), Kinderdijk, Cologne, Koblenz & Middle Rhine, Miltenberg, Würzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Melk & Krems, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.

I just boarded the boat today and the average age is about 70, so it'll be a relaxing journey with lots of time for investigating investment ideas.

  • FEZ: Volume Is Surging [View article]
Sgt, I can think of reasons, but we humans excel at rationalizing decisions ex post. After a more thorough personal analysis, it'd be more honest to say I didn't do an in-depth head to head analysis of the two prior to buying FEZ.

I just did a more thorough read up on VGK and it does have many appealing qualities, such as UK companies. The main feature I like of FEZ vs VGK is the higher dividend yield.

I may make this a topic of a future article, I appreciate your comment.

Eurostats Update: I received an email back from the Eurostat help desk informing me that their production unit is looking into their data source for Denmark's unemployment statistics. I'm confident that Statistics Denmark is correct, therefore the unemployment numbers for Denmark will be updated on Eurostats' website in due time. Hopefully they'll take a few minutes to double check their other unemployment numbers as well.

  • My Next Move With Sandstorm Gold [View article]
    Hello drbtk,

The research I've done has found that the people of Argentina are buying gold to preserve their purchasing power in the face of double digit inflation, but I didn't find any evidence of this gold being used in a barter system.

Of course, for the readers in Argentina, buying just about anything would be wise given that the Argentina Peso is the fastest depreciating currency in the southern hemisphere.
