I was getting my Master's in journalism three years ago and focused intensely on online media. I was one of the few. Let's be clear about one thing because we read a lot of blogs like this one seeming to offer hope. There is not going to be a recovery for some of the larger papers. Gannet made its move earlier than most and its properties will likely be much better off for it.

What's troubling is not knowing what will take the place of traditional media's government watchdog role. The market shows me people gravitate toward what they already believe. They don't want their beliefs and opinions challenged. Observing patterns of media consumption among friends, users on my company’s site, I don’t think it’s going to be very difficult for some audiences to be captured.

I also agree content has suffered over the past few years, and, yes, this is most obvious in the Sunday magazine. The ongoing serial fiction in the magazine was an interesting concept initially, but in the end just an oddity that doesn't deserve anywhere near the page space given to it each week.

I also agree the Op/Ed pages need fresh blood. Maureen Dowd just isn't a very good writer I'm afraid, and William Kristol could bore the teeth off a (snoring) saw. Keep Frank Rich (IMO the star here, and one of the best political commentators of our era), Friedman, and most of the rest, but add a half dozen more regulars and give each just one column a week.]]>

The advertisers would love to have more eyeballs on their ads and many of us old farts still love to wrap our hands on newsprint. But to pay and pay for this privilege is getting more stupid as time goes on... ]]>

And for years I've been arguing the Times turns off half of its potential readers and therefore half of its potential ad revenue with it's unprofessional, biased reporting and editing and its shrilly left editorials and op-ed columnists.

As long as Pinch, a Vietnam era radical and kid, runs the Times, it will continue to slide. Since he's still relatively young, the slide has a long way to go.]]>
