Yes, you're right on both counts, although it's difficult to imagine poly prices falling much further, to be honest.

Funny enough, I'm writing about that right now, but a short answer would be that the situation is not unlike 'MAD' or mutually assured destruction.

Well, with all respect, try to tell that to European banks. An Italian default will basically crater them.

Yes expat, much more needs to be done, but he's in a very sensitive position and it wasn't a bad first day in office..

Yes, twice, there are real bargains out there in Europe. However, if earnings will fall as a result of the crisis, they might not be that cheap anymore..

    1) Yes, solar needs subsidies (but other energy sources are getting lots of subsidies as well and don't have to pay for external effects, so it's by no means a level playing field)

    2) Solar is the only energy source that is falling in price and there is no reason to believe that will change anytime soon

    3) While indeed subsidies might be reduced, the picture is quite a bit more complicated and also European Union members have signed up to specific targets for renewables, so there will be a market still, perhaps a slightly less exuberant one (although the US market is going to double this year and other markets could take up the slack as well)

If Spain proofs anything it is to set the feed-in tariffs at the right level. As if other energy forms don't enjoy subsidies..

The difference is, in those days panels cost $25 per watt. Today they cost roughly $1 per watt, and there is no reason to think that technological progress isn't going to cut these costs further.

For what it's worth, this article doesn't argue the opposite. We still believe in the long-term prospects of the industry, it's the only energy source that is getting cheaper. What is happening though is a short-term dynamic which makes it rather difficult for solar companies to make a profit, as described in the article.

Actually we got that in the text already (the Zacks downgrade) so it wasn't today.

Kelvin, with all respect, perhaps you should actually READ the article before commenting about it.

Thanks for that article. Apparently opinions differ here Morningstar argues for the 70 cents limit, although it is possible we're talking about two different things. We were referring to non-silicon cost, that is, process efficiencies, but this might be a rather semantic discussion.

As it happens, 2010 had higher demand (from the article:)
["The data, collected from various companies and colleagues were compared to various data sources and thus led to an estimate of 23.5 GW (Fig. 1), representing a doubling of production compared to 2009."]
But agreed, demand figures have a wide margin of error (which is discussed in the article as well.

Yes, US demand is doubling this year, China might ramp up (we actually wrote an earlier article about this), but the two biggest markets are stalling and with capacity ever increasing, this is really not good and will take time to work off the oversupply and stabilize ASP's, we feel.

  • Argentina: A Serious Challenge To The Euro And Economic Orthodoxy [View article]
Well, we did mention capital flight in the article already and it has been going on for some time. Partly it is because Argentinians have a history not to trust their own monetary affairs (and it's difficult to blame them for this), partly it's because further peso depreciation is to be expected.
