  • Could Apple Hit $1,000 A Share? China Holds The Key [View article]
Wifi is not as widely used in China as elsewhere... actually when the iPhone was first released in China its wifi capabilities were stopped because of govt issues... one reason why at that point consumers bought cracked ones from HK that had wifi capability. But even so, wifi is not as widely used here.

Appreciate the kind comments. Exactly -- Apple cannot let its guard down in China, in either innovation or in sales channel strategy, as the competition here is really catching up on both the high end and low ends in terms of looks, functionality. The other main key is simply distribution. People won't buy what they can't, even if they want it and Apple is too slow in getting product out the door in China.

Hmmm. Steve Jobs knows everything in the world better than everyone??? Yeah, you might want to rethink your worldview. He was a genius at what he knows and a genius to know what he does not.

Apple made a serious mistake by going with Unicom rather than China Mobile. Apple is far more powerful than operators in most markets so are able to negotiate very high deals in profit sharing of data. Not so in China where CM dominates higher income, higher data use consumers.

Those stores are not good for Apple because they lose revenue sharing in data. Not much money in just selling a handset without anything else, recurring revenue etc. Phones also lock up during updates so many consumers refuse to even use apps, at least not as much as official phone users, for fear of getting locked out. Thus... Apple loses revenue.

Very good points. And it is an even bigger issue because the bandwidth speeds in China are atrociously slow. That is one reason for calls by many to privatize the telecom sector here because access speeds are deplorably slow for a country that is an economic superpower. The slow speeds will eventually impact business in a meaningful and negative way.

Yes, thanks. The question for me is... is he worth it? My guess is probably but my guess is that his options will be worth even more if he gets China right.

Good point indeed. In many ways Apple is hamstrung by its supply chain. They need to work on that. One of their issues is that Foxconn is too powerful in their relationship. Eventually that could cause problems is Foxconn has to raise labor and other prices a ton.

Agreed. The opportunity is enormous here, Apple just needs to move faster. They don't have as large a lead in technology as they did a few years ago. Android is being widely adopted which will help obviously with more apps being made for China.

Thank you for the kind comments. I really appreciate it. My book (released this month) has more info on Apple and how they are doing in China. Frankly, they have been real slow in China as they have been very focused on the US market. They are just so successful that sometimes executives don't feel the pressure to go out of their comfort zones because they just make so much money anyway. I don't think losing the guy to JC Penney will hurt them at all in China... they just need to pick up speed because Samsung and others will take away share from the low and high ends.

Appreciate the kind comments Colin. Indeed, companies need to take what I call a China 1st strategy when expanding here... they need to know when to localize and when to keep global paradigms/ standards. SBUX really gets it.

YUM! is another example of an extremely well-run MNC in China (full disclosure, KFC is one of my largest clients). They have a strong mgt team on the ground here, adapt to local conditions in terms of food/ design/ pricing. YUM itself has great price points with Pizza Hut and others. The company will continue to grow fast, outcompeting MCD for sure here.
