I wonder about the changing background picture- obviously a stark difference from Google's minimalistic background.... I'd be curious to see A/B testing from Bing's side

What about Apple? The existence of the iPhone is their Trojan horse into search.

I agree that Yahoo is still somewhat risky, and the recent stock surge has more to do with optimism for Marissa Mayer's plans. Although, I too am optimistic, and I believe we'l see more interesting plans from them in the coming weeks/months.

Your post supports my thesis- if you want to know about Kanye's new album, you are more likely to go to Fb then to Google, or at least more likely then you were 10 years ago.

I agree- DDG wouldn't be able to scale properly bc they haven't even indexed the whole web; they cull from other SE's. Blekko has however. But behemoths like FB and Apple would be able to.

I agree that a head on competition with Google is impossible, but it isnt head on- its veering into it.

Consider Google to be the Titanic, and social media to be the iceberg

Your solution is a technical one that doesn't work for most people- damage was done by the NSA PR as evidenced by DDG's surge in traffic the days after prism leaked

I don't entirely disagree with yours statement, but you ignore the social media theory- Google failed at that, and it is veering into search

Why is 'Facebook on the decline'? What a ludicrous statement. It's the largest social media network in the world by far, and nary a contender in sight. If they want to go into search, which they are, because Zuck announced it, then they are a threat.

Apple screwed up maps. Doesn't mean they would screw up search. And Siri already performing hundreds of millions of search queries per day ;)

I agree but most people, at least from a marketing perspective, can be convinced to use a secure, encrypted, non-NSA linked search engine. Privacy is paramount, even if it hurts SERPS
