Yes but from the PR perspective that doesn't work. Now they are making encrypted the DEFAULT setting, whereas before it was not.

Agreed, for the most part. Yahoo does have an interesting situation developing if they indeed can shake out of their agreement with Bing. I'm curious which route they will go. Maybe team up with Apple??

That's why the NSA stuff can never hurt DDG- they don't collect anything, whereas Google says they simply won't share it

I'd agree, but if it has no traction in the US, then from a PR standpoint, which is where DDG staked their ground, then Ixquick can't gain much ground.

Do you realize how hard it is to eek out an 18% search share with Google Goliath swinging it's ball and chain?

Google's eyebrows were raised, and probably wrinkled with the Scroogled campaign.

And MSFT is not slowing down- they are continuing the Bing It On campaign.

Yes- the timing of the Nest acquisition was a bit much to swallow. It simply adds to people's mistrust of Google, even if they do have honest and noble plans for Nest.

Absolutely agreed and great point. Google is proactive, and moving to 100% encryption made sense from a PR standpoint, but less so from a user-fulfillment standpoint.

Regardless, I argue that significant damage has been done, and DDG was able to carve out a niche with a ladder due to the NSA privacy flare-up.

DDG is still developing, but I believe that they will begin to attract more investors.

And Google's tinkering really is a bit much. I work in SEO, so I witness this every day.

AGreed about your point regarding NSA, but my point is that Google was NOT encrypting search prior to a few months ago, and DDG was!! So even if at some point in the future the NSA approaches DDG with a demand to release user data, DDG will say, "hey, we don't have any user data, because we don't TRACK it".... See the difference? The privacy damage has already been done.

It's true- I really think Apple is going to have to foray into search in a much bigger way than with just SIRI. They have the platform. Its a matter of time at this point.

Yea, and that's why the NSA/PRISM stuff was so damaging

The point was that after the NSA news, a tiny search engine had HUGE growth and I'm sure Google brass took notice. It's a slow climb.
