@solucky - "Its more hobby than clever, but would you spend 30-40K for a better battery on an old EV ?" - electric motors and ice car parts age differently.

"Gas vehicles pollute less so the Tesla is terrible for the environment." - I see where you are coming from. Mind over Data :)

"Tesla wont be around in 2020." - Are you sure your'e not talking about GM?

@solucky - "sure you can upgrade an ICE" - really? What can I upgrade my 2014 model year car with 5 years from now? What do I do with the stuff that it replaces?

"Unfortunately the battery is only a new larger tank not a new car." - The big complaint with Electrics is range. The big complaint with gas cars is mileage.

    @guyinUSA

    1. You need to read the whole discussion. We are talking off grid here. Solar City stopped selling batteries that are grid connected. They don't even offer an off grid solution yet.

    2. It is for regular homeowners. An off grid lead acid solution = a room full of batteries. An off-grid Tesla solution can fit in a closet.

    3. Are you seriously telling us that Lead Acid batteries are more reliable than a Tesla battery pack or longer lasting?

You have no idea what Tesla batteries cost to Tesla because nobody does. The 300$ is just a random guess. It could very well be 200.

Also you dismiss old batteries for use in off-grid applications once their life in the automobile are over.

@i need a bailout - what you fail to see here is that Tesla's can be upgraded while no ICE car can be. They don't need to be. They can be. And there in lies the flaw in your argument. By your logic, every car on the road is outdated in a few years. But the Tesla can be upgraded while no other car can. If the 2020 BMW 3 series has 50mpg, can you upgrade your 2014 BMW to that new engine? Nope. But if Tesla makes a 500 mile battery in 2020, can you upgrade your Model S - yes! This is not a problem, it is a major plus for Tesla.

@guyinUSA - I didn't say that. But Tesla can be in energy storage since they make the lowest cost highest energy density battery commercially available.

Solarcity on the other hand, using Tesla batteries, that could be looked at like a utility.

@i need a bailout - you mean it outsold the model s 5:1 in some one specific month that you checked ? Overall it doesn't even outsell it 5:1 in the Us. Forget Norway.

VW doesn't even want to build a battery factory. They are not serious about EVs.

@guyinUSA - we dont have Q1 2014 numbers yet. But my guess is that Tesla will be in the top 3 positions in Q1 2014. MB USA increased sales from 3077 to over 5000 for the S Class. Next in line is BMW X6 at 4127. I'm estimating the Model S to be around that much so it will have number 2 or number 3 position in the large luxury segment.

"Nissan Leaf is outselling Tesla 5:1 in Norway." - wow :) awesome. You will be happy to know that in march the Model S set the record for the most sold car in a month in Norway - http://bit.ly/1hoVXlQ

@I need a bailout - how about some proof of your statement. You already have mentioned several times in this thread that the Model S does not outsell its competitors but have yet to provide a single other sedan in the price range that outsold the Model S in 2013.

"Not very green." - greener than gasoline no matter how you look at it.

@i need a bailout - I already challenged you to name one sedan in the Model S price range that outsold it in 2013. Just one sedan. Corvette is not a sedan and nor is it in the Model S price range.

@i need a bailout - I already told you who the competitors are:
    the "large luxury sedan" segment

lets use autoguide for a moment since you seem to like that source. Can you find me any 4 door sedan in the same price range at autoguide that outsold the Model S in 2013 in the US.

That is the point of discussion here. So stop distracting. None of the Model S competitors (in size/price/category) outsold it in 2013 in the US. That's fact.

My guesstimate for Q1 is that Model S will be second after the MB S class in that segment.

@I need a bailout - apparently you dont read the news much. These used to be a 50k after rebate Model S which was discontinued due to lack of demand.

Also, now that your entire argument about what cars compete with the Model S and how it outsold all of them has been shot down, this is all you have? That you will continue to use inaccurate data even though there is better data out there?

A corvette outperforms the tesla at what? making noise? polluting? 0-60? Seating Capacity? 0-100? cargo volume? safety rating? number of recalls? number of doors? mpg/mpge? cost to operate?

    P.S. http://bit.ly/v4qQAQ

P.S. For competition I use the "large luxury sedan" segment. Unless you have better ideas

@itsallabout profit, the average revenue of the Model S to Tesla is 107,000 so autoguide is obviously wrong. What would you compare the Model S to anyway? The target audience of the Model S is the buyers of the S Class, the Panamera, 7 series etc.
