  • Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, A Great Long-Term Play? [View article]
There's been some talk about big-pharma companies with sales in Europe possibly facing considerable write-downs of accounts receivables that are due from hospitals and governments of the PIIGS countries. Do you have any views on that generally, and specifically with regard to Teva's possible exposure?

  • The Risks of a Merciless Market as the Earnings Parade Begins [View article]
Well said. But as Macbeth might ask:
Are you not concerned that "all our yesterdays have lighted fools", or may light the way, "to dusty death"?
Alas, one may want to consider what happens when the "brief candle" goes out.....

  • Lowe's vs. Home Depot: Which Company Benefits in a Housing Bounce? [View article]
I'm a huge fan of HiddenLevers' (HL) functionality and I think it's best used as an integral element in investment assessment, not as a stand-alone, all incompassing indicator. My own anecdotal experience especially with HD is not too different than some mentioned above...years ago when they opened and every employee was an 'owner', it was an amazing business model and a great place to shop. Then, as pointed out above, mgmt found a way (several) to ruin it. I believe that's what explains the HL long-term chart showing LOW's outperforming. But look at the 5yr chart on HL. That clearly shows that HD outperformed in a period of time when housing pxes were down and then flat-lining. That, i believe, is explained by the meaningfully positive shifts in mgmt at HD and the subsequent execution of a better business plan. While years ago I had personally written off HD as a place to shop, in the past year, they've won me back through upgraded personnel, better inventory selection, and price competitiveness.
In my experience, HiddenLevers' charts have pointed out interesting historical correlations, that when combined with the historical facts and fundamentals, adds value to the investment process.
    FYI...Long both LOW and HD.

  • Nalco: Should Some of Your Oars Be in This Water Treatment Company? [View article]
It's been some time since my article on NALCO was written and the above comments-chain was exchanged. I just read an thoughtful piece, not directly related to NLC's business per se, but on the idea of 'water markets' that I thought I'd share as a matter of interest to those who are focusing on the overall water industry. Would be eager to hear/share views on this theme.

  • Sudan: Sunday's Referendum and Its Implications for Oil [View article]
At the tail end of this article, I mentioned that there are several reasons to focus on Sudan's situation, one of which is to assess the markets' reaction to any incident of oil supply disruptions. I also noted that this might be compared to upcoming events elsewhere, most notably Nigeria, with regard to their April Presidential election. Violence in Nigeria leading up to the elections has been on the rise. For valuable insight into this situation, please see the following link to commentary from the former US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell:

  • Banking on Hudson City Bancorp, People’s United Financial [View article]
As noted in the article above, any view on the US regional banking sector is highly dependent upon a view on the overall US economy. Below, I've provided a link to a very thorough piece on that subject written by Dr. John H. Makin, Principal, Caxton Associates and Resident Scholar at AEI (American Enterprise Institue for Public Polcy Research).

  • Sudan: Sunday's Referendum and Its Implications for Oil [View article]
Thank you! In my view, the dynamics of political events in Africa are likely to have more and more direct impact on global markets, especially in the energy and materials/resources sectors. This, of course, pales in comparison to the relevance on a humanitarian and human interest basis, so collectively, it is clearly worthy of note on many levels.
Thanks again for reading the article and commenting!
