  • New strategy for McDonald's laid out at investor meeting [View news story]
Who knew a 17+% net margin would make people think MCD is in trouble...

  • U.S. rig count plunges in past week but still exceeds year-ago count [View news story]
I wouldn't have clicked on it if it said <2% drop in one week. Bravo.

  • Erin Burnett doesn't take the Wall Street protesters seriously, calling them out for their use of cellphones, MacBooks, Lululemon clothing and other capitalist icons. But hedge fund manager Eric Jackson, writing in Forbes, finds Burnett's critique "vapid" - with youth unemployment at 18%, "the frustration and palpable anger on display [are] completely legitimate."  [View news story]
"But who is feeling the pain in the recession? The greedy homeowners and the homeowners who never did a damn thing wrong through all of this."

Yes the homeowners did do a lot of things wrong. They decided to buy $150k-$200k houses that were selling for $800k-$900k with a $65k-$70k per year household income. That's half the blame; the other half is banks lending to somebody in that situation.

  • The debt-ceiling deal passes the House, 269-161. The plan is a two-stage raise of the debt ceiling by $2.4T while cutting spending by about $2.7 trillion over 10 years. The Senate may begin debate tonight but is likely to vote on the deal tomorrow. (MW) Updated: The Senate will vote at noon tomorrow.  [View news story]
We will see the ugliness come out in November when the "Special Committee" attempts to put everything in order and decide what gets cut and by how much. But in the end the deficit will still increase since we are looking at cutting about $270B a year with a defense budget over $640B if I recall correctly. But at least we can get on with our lives and not worry about anything for a few months.

  • Pershing posts new Herbalife-bashing video [View news story]
The video may be a blatant bashing of HLF, but anyone who claims and believes Herbalife products can cure autoimmune diseases and diabetes and all the other stuff that was said in the video is a colossal doof. I mean wow, people actually believe that Herbalife products can take the place of medicines?

I am going to start selling my socks. They cure cancer. I had three different forms of cancer and after wearing my socks for one month, they were gone and never came back because I kept wearing them. Any of you HLF supporters looking to buy? It will cost you $50/month for the rest of your life. Send me a private message and we can complete the transaction.

  • Microsoft Offers Investors An Annualized Gross Return Of Up To 25% Over The Next 5 Years [View article]
In my mind, Microsoft trades at a correct multiple for a company approaching an inflection point. Microsoft has two options: 1) innovate and succeed, or 2) continue what its doing and stagnate, or slowly move backwards. It's the life cycle of businesses. Microsoft has the resources to innovate, but will they do it correctly? That's the big question in my mind, because it appears MSFT is simply going at it willy nilly in an attempt to make something work by pure chance.

I also find it hard to even value MSFT because the share buybacks inflate the earnings per share value. EPS is a good metric to use, but you must take into consideration the anti-dilutive effect of the buybacks and how that can make the company appear more profitable than it really is. Margins, on the other hand, as you can see in the chart above, are low; which should be expected for a company approaching an inflection point in its life cycle.

  • The Price May Be Increasing For An Amarin Buyout [View article]
I am interested in seeing a Vascepa launch. I think that Amarin will do a very good job. They may not have any experience in marketing, but management is taking their sweet time and I think this is a good sign. At least it is better than rushing the product to market without a business/marketing plan.

I have seen small companies go at it alone in the past and the stock prices soar after the results are released. On the flip side, I have seen complete flops. I think Amarin will follow the pattern of the former.

  • Beige Book shows "widespread" job gains across districts [View news story]
You must have missed the credit downgrade three years ago...

They still report bank closures. 17 have closed in 2014 (compared to 24 in 2013, 51 in 2012, 92 in 2011, 157 in 2010, 140 in 2009, 25 in 2008, and 27 from 2000 through 2007). You don't see the reporting anymore because a rate of 1.5 banks per month doesn't give doom and gloomers the ammo they need to say the world is ending.

I agree the debt is a terrible thing for the nation in the long run, but I do not agree with doom and gloomers who do not have their facts in line...

  • U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has granted Apple (AAPL) a preliminary injunction on U.S. sales of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Nexus phone, which it co-developed with Google (GOOG). The ruling comes two days after a preliminary injunction was granted on sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. A recent William Blair report claimed the Galaxy Nexus has been Verizon's #3 phone in June. An Apple patent covering unified voice and text search drew the injunction.  [View news story]
Once AAPL eliminates the competition via injunctions they can charge twice as much for their products. One step closer to an AAPL monopoly.

  • The 194-party UN climate conference forges a deal that would for the first time force all the biggest polluters to cut greenhouse gas emmissions, with the Kyoto Protocol extended for another five years also. Environmentalists say the deal doesn't go far enough, while the greenhouse skeptics could well ask how much it will all cost.  [View news story]
The majority of actual scientists don't believe we are causing global temperature increases. But they do agree we are causing elevated levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. So the argument is how much is this CO2 contributing to global warming.

The bigger problem is the broader population is not educated about global warming and the media pushes an apocalyptic scenario if we don't change our ways. Which is good for tv but bad when people take it seriously.

  • Deliciously rich: A Florida woman leaves her banker husband to join forces with the Occupy Wall Street crowd in NY, comparing her decision to abandon her family to serving in the military. She admits her mom is calling the decision "selfish," while she says her confused hubby noted, "he’s working for 'the Man,' and I’m fighting against him."  [View news story]

  • President Obama is due to address the nation in a late-night statement in five minutes as U.S. networks including Fox and ABC report Osama bin Laden is dead. Updated 11:35 p.m.: Obama has begun speaking.  [View news story]
It was supposedly a CIA mission in Pakistan that got the job done. I am interested to see if his age and health was a factor in the death.
Glad to hear he is no longer going to lead terrorist attacks.
