  • Monday’s Headline: “Jobs Introduces the iPhone 3GSX”

    3GSX?  You mean 4G.  Right?

While everyone has been calling the soon to be revealed iPhone by “4G”, I have to wonder; is everyone expecting this phone to operate on 4th generation cellular technology, a.k.a. 4G?  If not, “iPhone 3GSX” or something similar would be a more appropriate name.

I have yet to see anyone question the media’s labeling of this phone as “4G”.  Most articles are about the form factor, memory, front facing camera and the flash on the back, etc.  Granted, the initial use of the label, "iPhone 4G", was probably meant to signify Apple's 4th iteration of this product, but in the cell phone industry, "4G" means something about the network technology being supported.

To date, the past iPhone names have been: iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, so, with the exception of the first one the names do not correlate to the version of the phone, but rather the cell technology it supports.

If the next iPhone supports LTE, then the name “4G” may be appropriate even though LTE is more like a 3.5G than true 4G (  For arguments sake and to make the carriers feel better, assume LTE and is a 4G technology.

AT&T reports that they will start rolling out LTE in 2011 (, but as we have seen with Sprint and Verizon, it is a slow, expensive process and LTE probably won’t be widely available till 2012 or even 2013.

Expect the first iPhone 4G to be on either Sprint or Verizon at some future, and hopefully not to distant date.  I think Apple will wait on an AT&T LTE capable phone until 2011 and Monday’s phone will be an iPhone 3GSX.
