My former username was ricarpe (http://seekingalpha.com/user/806440/profile). I no longer need to hide behind a pseudonym.
I am a former Corporal of Marines. After completing active service, I put myself through college on the GI Bill, some student loans, and by living in the smallest room in my parents house.
I earned an Associates of Arts in Political Science and completed my undergraduate education with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and a Certificate in Political Economy. My interests are primarily in economic development, international trade, and international affairs. I am continuing my education by pursuing a Masters of Science in Applied Economics part-time.
I am currently working at the US Bureau of Labor Statistics as an economist in the Current Employment Statistics - State and Area division. (http://www.bls.gov/sae)
My work experience includes working as an economist for the Statistics of Income division of the IRS (http://www.irs.gov/uac/SOI-Tax-Stats-Corporation-Tax-Statistics) where I performed economic and statistical analysis on corporate income tax returns. I also have some experience in the private sector performing statistical data analysis on internet usage from "opted-in" tracked participants and logged information from websites.
My investment experience and knowledge is mostly through self-learning -- I invested while I was in the Marine Corps and was able to profit a bit from it then. While I was in college, I continued to learn through paper trading accounts -- and a one-year stint working for a investment company known for it's mutual funds. I continue to invest today.
I am a retired lawyer who also was CEO of a small merchant banking firm affiliated with BOA and of a financial services holding company. I have been an entrepreneur in the medical services area. I presently spend most of my time reading about investing and doing so.

Matthew V. Pixa is the President and founder of My Portfolio Guide, LLC. My Portfolio Guide is an independent, fee-only (non-commission) Registered Investment Advisory firm based in the state of California. My Portfolio Guide offers customized investment guidance focused on the needs of individuals from all stages and walks of life.
Matt’s curiosity and passion for investing began during the stock market crash of 1987. Being a new investor without any guidance and coupled with the dramatic events of that period, an interest and passion for becoming a student of the markets was born.
Matt later studied Economics and earned a Bachelor’s degree while also competing as a student-athlete for California State University Long Beach. After advancing his career for 12 years he decided to return to business school and further his education by earning an MBA from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.
Matt was trained and worked as an investment advisor for several of the largest and most widely respected brokerages on Wall Street as well as one of the most eminent private wealth management firms in the nation. Early on in his financial career, he learned that most “advisors” are actually not trained to give unbiased investment advice. Many simply get licensed and then are employed as salespeople to pitch products or build a book of business that is only scalable by outsourcing the relationship to others. It becomes a numbers game and what typically gets left behind is the best interest of the client.
Matt lives in Seal Beach, CA with his wife Cecilia, daughter Isabel, and son Lance. He enjoys coaching youth sports for his children’s teams and also competes in Ironman triathlons as a way to stay fit, disciplined, and blow off any left over energy…
I am a travel nurse. I am informed I may have to take a permanent position if the Obama health care bill is not reversed as I am counted in the full time even though I work for various travel companies and they would not be able to sustain the financial burden and will fold. I am long on gold bullion, have bonds in 401k cash in IRA and want to invest in gold and oil through the IRA and do not know enough how to do it, I may have to convert the IRA in to a broker account. I did better on my own than putting money into guaranteed annuity for 8%Please advise. God Bless You.
