  • Starbucks Improving Across the Board: Is That Enough? [View article]
There is a typo in the report above -- headline figures of layoffs totaled 7000 not 700 over the time period I was referring to. Taking a look at the 10Ks you can see the number of U.S. employees declined from 143,000 to 111,000 from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009--probably due to layoffs as well as attrition.

I understand your comment. It's hard to cheerlead about any company's high cash levels and improving returns when it's due in part to the thousands of front line people that have lost their jobs -- real people, not just "headcount." But we can't isolate one company or one community. Look down the street, talk to friends, read blogs, newspapers, etc -- it's happening almost everywhere in almost any industry.

Hopefully companies and individuals can find a strategy for growth in this harsh economy and pick themselves up by the boot straps. I also think this is happening. It will take a while, but all these people will be rehired in some way again, and even a few of them will learn valuable lessons and emerge as more innovative, productive and lower cost competitors.

This new index looks interesting, seems a little bit similar to the U.S. Department of Transportation traffic volume trends: www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/...

thanks for your taking a look

Regarding the number of stocks, I haven't found an additional factor yet that would narrow the list and consistently improve overall performance at the same time, but I've been working on it! Hard to do manually -- if you could buy me a subscription to Clarifi or another fundamental backtester, please let me know!

Asif, really enjoyed reading ATVI reports, thanks for sharing those. I was thinking of doing a little more work on that one, so I'm glad I read that first.
