  • Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) moves up 1.5% premarket as traders keep evaluating the impact the Disney-Netflix deal will have on the company. SA author Stephen Faulkner predicted the reaction, calling the downward spike in SIRI yesterday off the Netflix news as overdone. His take on the complicated entanglement of Liberty Media, Starz, and Netfliz: "Both Sirius XM's and Starz's performance will impact Liberty Media's valuation, but Sirius XM and Starz do not affect each other." [View news story]

Consolidation is good when consolidation finds higher lows. Watch that $2.85 for a break (not necessarily today).

I do not think SIRI will issue any sort of dividend anytime soon. I see buybacks as the most likely course of action.

Agree, it'll remain bearish. The thing is... P really hasn't stepped out of the bearish trend except on brief moments of rumor. I don't think that is going to change.

P / Spotify fill different needs, but a combined service will win out in the future. I have some simple ideas for revenue models that I figure would work, and I fail to see why a service could not incorporate both a pay option and a successful ad based option... you just need to make the pay option more attactive. Then again, I am not running one of these companies, just a guy with an opinion.

Don't try to play the valuation / numbers game too much on any of these companies. Hasn't worked for a long time.

Yes and I looked sharp in it!

The drop took it from $2.83 to $2.73 so it was sharp enough :)

I don't see us going over the cliff so I expect they'll just kick it down the road a bit soon enough.

    Re: your explanations

    1) Agree... I think this fiscal cliff thing is a scapegoat.

    2) I'm glad you consider it but as we both see here, it's still just a conspiracy theory.

    3) I agree this is the most likely. My girlfriend uses P ... doesn't really pay attention to the ads except how annoying it is to get the same few ads over and over again about buy one get one sales for shoes (that she doesn't care about). I don't put a lot of faith in monetization here either... just don't see them being able to make it work right now.

Regarding me paying $50 a month for music, I understand that's extremely high and unlikely for most, but I don't think $3 a month is, and that is all P would have to charge users to be profitable. They could charge $5 a month on top of cell phone bills and have it included in the plan and revenue share a bit with the cell company as well. The problem? Not going to get 50+ million to pay. They've painted themselves into the corner by NOT charging for the service and instead building out the user base. Ad revenue is likely coming in rather shy of what they expected, and they're banking on this IRFA thing to make it all work how THEY want it to.

The future is not in radio anyways... sure it's a ways off, but a service like Spotify is where things are headed, with randomized playlists and song suggestion algorithms as part of the deal alongside on demand anytime anywhere capability. That's years away, though. I think artists would be wise to support the proper technologies and services which can best monetize their work and present return to them. That's direct downloads and on demand access which charges a fee for services.

Like I said, at least a few years on that though, maybe more.
