  • Motorola Mobility's XOOM Sells Out at Many Best Buy Stores ... Time to Buy Shares? [View article]
It's hard to argue with that... eventually I'll probably put together an article addressing my thoughts on it.

Realistically, I think that the iPad2 hurts more because of the intangibles (media attention, apple-enthusiast excitement, etc) than the product itself. the device is pretty much what people were expecting: cameras and facetime, some more power under the hood, consistent pricing, aesthetically pleasing, but nothing mind-blowing.

I don't think it'll do much to change consumers minds - some people were waiting for the ipad2 with nearly-certain plans to purchase it, some were ready to pull the trigger on the first android tablet (xoom), and a lot are waiting to see how the dust settles - the next round of android tablets vs. playbook vs. touchpad.

a surprisingly and truly "revolutionary" ipad 2 could have made things a lot more challenging for MMI today.

That is a good point - one that I could have researched a bit more thoroughly before publishing.

Another bit of information that I should have included in that section of the article is that Xooms are available online at Motorola's site ( and ( So while selling all of 5 Xooms per store certainly won't be meaningful to earnings, I still am enthused by the apparent interest in the device as indicated by the widespread sellouts AND the fact that a very interested consumer can still buy a tablet if his local store is out of stock.

I think that calling the Xoom a knockoff is beyond ignorant. The biggest differentiator between the Xoom and the iPad1 is the operating system - the Xoom runs an operating system that was actually built for the tablet (i.e. multitasking functionality, widgets, etc), not just blown up from a phone. (Plus, the hardware is superior, though Apple has the ability to negate that depending on the iPad2 specs that get announced tomorrow). I think your statement may have been applicable to pre-Honeycomb tablets, but the Xoom (and future offerings from other manufacturers) are much, much more than just "knockoffs."

better processor, screen (actually matches the dimensions of movies that get watched on the tablet!), ram, etc... there isn't anything in the Xoom that isn't better. Of course the product release cycle is a factor, but if a consumer walks in to Best Buy today, they are going to choose between a Xoom and a current iPad - not the iPad 2 that Apple will announce next week and put on sale sometime thereafter.

and I think plenty of people are happy with their Droid, Droid 2 or Droid X... many people that I know started out with a Droid and made the 2 or X their next cell phone purchase.

no, but you might be. not only is it technologically superior but it also runs an operating system actually designed for tablets (not just blown up from a phone/php)!

  • U.S. Listed Chinese Stocks: Mistreated and Undervalued (Part 2) [View article]
in terms of USA's accounting, a financial statement review is different from an audit - it is an analysis of a company's finances, but substantially narrower in scope than an audit and the amount of assurance/confidence provided is not as robust as an audit. i'm not sure if it's different in china...

sample auditor's letter for a financial statement review:

i could be mistaken, but i'm pretty sure you're wrong about the log-out-log-in method of getting around the cap. I'm pretty sure they track IP or something of that nature to prevent what you describe (as i tried to circumvent the limit before myself before ponying up the $1 to keep listening).

in regards to your comment about a "top 40 format" - i don't know what the "format" part means, but the music Pandora chooses certainly isnt limited to top 40-like songs. I listen primarily to rap, a genre where much of the music is released through "mix-tapes" that are semi-official, non-commercial releases, and Pandora does a great job of mining through all of that content to the point where I've stumbled on a lot of old/obscure music from big artists while listening.
