  • European Strategy: The Solution to Sovereign Debt Crisis
    The way I see it is that if a different member of the ECB, EU or IMF gives an interview to the media about steps they are considering for solving the sovereign debt crisis, the Dax will be at 7000 and the S&P will hit 2000 before they ever have to release a real plan.  In fact, the financial markets may just heal on their own.  Brilliant!

  • Underfunded Pension Obligations At All Time High
    Addendum to prior post: As companies true up their pension funding, it depletes cash and decreases EPS, harming valuation.   I suspect a number of plans have been more aggressive, exacerbating the problem. Add this to a stronger dollar and S&P estimates have to decline.

  • U.S. Pension Funding At All Time Low
    The S&P 500 group of companies has funded only 71% of its obligations, an all time low, and down from 77% in 2008, according to a Morgan Stanley report. The reasons are clear: low interest rates and poor equity returns.  The peak was in 1999 at 129% of funding requirements. With interest rates forecasted to be depressed for an extended period, corporations will have to allocate cash to the issue. Furthermore, MS has performed a study which indicates a correlation to stock performance and a company's funding obligations.
