  • Has The Future Changed That Much For Tesla Motors? [View article]
For those all hot for Elon remember that SCTY missed estimates the first quarter to report as a public company as well. Naturally, the valuation of a business is based on future cash flows so meeting short-term numbers isn't all that creates a valuable company. The problem though is that eventually you have to beat estimates and increase future expectations or the company won't be worth more.

Right now all I see are investors falling for the hype of Elon creating great products, but I've yet to see any details on how he is going to all of a sudden create these huge profits. Just wait until the Model X costs come flowing into the numbers. He has no history of generating profits.

    Glenn,
Think everybody knows that one analyst can't cause the estimates to plunge that much. YF! shows that 5 analysts dropped estimates, which only means that more are to come.

Musk has rarely done what he forecasts when it comes to profits. Did you not notice that analysts expected $2.57 at this time last year for 2014. Now it is barely hugging $1. That is a dramatic collapse in expectations.

All of the companies mentioned made tremendous profits along the way. Those companies forged into huge valuations b/c they generated huge cash flows that were used to create near monopolies to crush the market. TSLA hopes to be cash flow breakeven this year. AMZN is the only company to ever obtain a massive valuation by not constantly exceeding financial projections. Different story than the TSLA situation. AMZN improved an existing process to grab demand. TSLA is attempting to build a whole new business that it isn't even clear that people want. Don't think it ends well for TSLA.

    dennisg13,
define successful? Think the point is that Musk has been successful at creating the products and hype to drive valuations up, but he isn't successful at running profitable, sustainable companies. SCTY expects massive losses for the next few years. Without his name would they even still be a float?

the difference is that it took Steve Jobs until the 2nd go around at AAPL to focus on profits and not just good products.

If Elon is like Steve, than TSLA will be near bankruptcy in a few years.

    manfredthree,
how come all these great points aren't adding up to increasing profits? The problem is that you're trying to change basic valuation methodologies by backing up the current valuation.

    Timothy Paul,
The rise is all momentum driven as the earnings estimates are indeed plunging. This article wasn't intended to tell people to short the stock now, but when the stock rises and the estimates plunge the stock usually follows. TSLA will have to defy logic to rise from here.

    stainless,
Ignore what facts? Nobody has time to read 1,000 word comments. Write an article yourself if you've got points or learn to be more concise.

At the end of the day, TSLA can't turn a decent profits no matter how great the car. End of story!

    Logical,
That concept is too logical for the longs. They are riding the momentum to the top of the mountain and don't even get it. Before they know it, TSLA will be talking about raising cash via equity to build the Model X. All of the hoped for profits from the Model S will disappear into thin air.

TSLA and Mush are similar to AAPL and Jobs in one manner. Neither understood how to run a profitable business in the first go around. It took Jobs until coming back to save AAPL to understand that profits rule the market.

Too funny... started by own firm in 2010, but I've got nearly 20 years of investment experience.

Anyway, what is in the intrinsic value of FB? You failed to provide any details. Just got news this weekend that Home is a huge failure.

Somebody has a lot of free time. Pointed out some clear facts that the longs should consider when paying $80 on Friday. Ignore at your own peril.

You can't be serious to compare AAPL to TSLA. AAPL was a money machine and TSLA will always be a money drain. At this rate, the company won't even make money next year during the 3rd year of production for the Model S.
