Stuart graduated from the University of Toronto in 1992, receiving the Gold Medal in Commerce at University College. After a short career in public accounting, Stuart worked at one of Canada's largest banks as a corporate credit manager. In 1997, Stuart joined a global investment bank where he spent six years as an equity research analyst. Subsequently, Stuart joined an independent investment dealer as an institutional equity salesman. After several years as a full-time investor, in November 2014 Stuart joined Georgian Capital Partners.
I look primarily at two kinds of investments on the long side: 1) small, undiscovered companies with simple business models, aligned management and significant growth prospects; and 2) broken companies on the mend, which is to say value stocks. On the short side I look for broken companies with profound, difficult-to-fix problems. I started out as a business journalist at The Globe and Mail and take a rigorous reporter's approach to getting the facts.
I am a value investor focused on situations where margin of safety is high including sum-of-the-parts, special situations and operating businesses.
I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics, a post graduate degree in accounting and am a CFA charterholder.
My academic background is in Engineering and management.
Besides one basic accounting course at university my investment knowledge is self-taught.
Reading books, SEC filings, annual reports, analyst reports, blog posts, MOOCs, message boards and listening to select podcasts and conference calls has helped me enormously to evolve as an investor.
Engineering Physicist plus Post Grad in U.K.
Designer of Helicopter controls, Missile Systems, Nuclear Reactor safety equipment and spectroscopy for six reactors, Nuclear Medicine equpment for brain surgery, nuclear spectroscopy instruments flown in satellites, and systems used in laboratories worldwide.
Since I am always the last person on any Titanic musical chair game of investment, I learned the importance of capital preservation and winning by not losing.
I have invested in Iridium, Enron, Novastar, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and numerous companies with unethical managements. None of these companies survived their managements. Such is the power of the dark side. Survive I must, by Way of the Cavy I must. Such is the power of the meek.
I am an investor relations consultant with 25+ years experience steering IR strategy and outreach for over 100 companies across a range of industries. We launched Catalyst Global in early 2012 to serve as a platform for innovating the IR role to better address the radically different dynamics and needs of public companies and investors.
Catalyst's mission is combining senior level experience and counsel with targeted outreach and efficient communications to deliver real change and share price results for "smidcap" companies in today's markets. We understand relationships and credibility take time, and we root all our work in integrity, candor and a focus on ROI.
I post on Seeking Alpha to expand the reach of client and other investment stories we like - and to understand the nature of these new channels of communication. Networking ideas and working with new media is integral to the IR function - plus it's fun.
CG Focus List is a separate service we use to highlight specific investment stories brought to us by some of the really smart investors we know. Profiled companies can be clients, ex-clients, non-clients or desired clients - but they are stories that offer very attractive investment potential and commensurate risk (there's no free ride in investing!)
My posts are NOT endorsed by the Companies on which I write - client or otherwise. We believe in truth and fair play at all times, and at all costs, and gravitate to those who share that view.
I am a Canadian entrepreneur who, after 35 years of starting up and selling on, various media-related companies; now spends his waking hours investing in the stock market and enjoying la dolce vita, living between Thailand and Bali.
