You're very right, which is why the article speculates that Apple may hurt Google in the consumer space while Microsoft may in the enterprise; it's the combination that may add up. Remember, all Google is, as far as we investors are concerned, is advertising (96% of the company) which is why the consumer matters and both Apple and Microsoft are trying to direct that consumer away. Microsoft has 92% of the traditional computing market with Windows and Apple has 7% with OSX. iOS has 66% of mobile market share and is already directing consumers away from Google. Google has great products and was at the forefront of the cloud movement (i.e. Chromebook) but as investors I think we have to be concerned with the current valuation given that the gateway companies through which consumers access Google are actively trying to steer those consumers away. The article is speculative and we'll know more upon gauging the reception of Windows 8, surface etc., as well as how Apple's migration away from Google manifests itself.

I think it's hard to speculate on, it really depends on where Facebook takes itself. Will they go out and start making mobile device operating systems or try and expand their e-mail offerings? Wherever FB is headed can't be bad for Bing, but I don't see any measurable advantages in the near future.

Both valid points. I just can't see Microsoft laying down when they have already sunk so much into Bing and they have such strong platforms to integrate the search engine with. In mobile, you're very right; iPhone accounts for about $1.3 billion in revenue and Google is paying Apple $1 billion so there wouldn't be much immediate impact on Google. Problem is right now it appears that iOS (both iPhone and iPad) is growing extremely fast and is preferred among consumers. So what happens to the Android market when there's an entry level iPad for $199 and an entry level iPhone for $0 with contract? (This fear may be what forced Google into hardware; they need consumers to love Android devices). Right now mobile advertising is a bigger percentage of Google's stock price than any other area and I think the risk there is worth considering. This is all relative to the current valuation though, Google is still a fantastic company.

The problem with DRYS is George Economou and management. Look into that situation before going long the stock.

  • Evaluating J.C. Penney As A Turnaround Play [View article]
Good thoughts guys. Interesting note: the company has stated that its standalone stores are outperforming the in-mall stores and they are looking to expand the brand via that medium. Should be interesting to see how that goes because success there will be highly reliant on making the stores a destination rather than an in-mall walkthrough for consumers.

  • The Bank Of New York Mellon Is Trading At A Historically Low Valuation [View article]
I believe those are good long plays (especially BK and WFC) but there may not be substantial earnings growth until the interest rate environment improves which is probably around two years out. Lots of patience needed here but the buyback and dividend help. I also agree with the above that BK will take a breath (or six) before moving higher. Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks, I apologize! I submitted a correction to the article. I only recently began following the stock after the recent decline (I look for value plays) and that wasn't indicated on the reports I use to compile the data. My apologies again and it should be fixed shortly.
