I founded the HRA (Hard Rock Analyst) family of resource publications with my late brother David in 1995. Prior to David's death I mainly handled the “financial analysis” side of our reviews of exploration, development and early production stories while Dave handled the "rock" side of the stories. I have a B.Comm. in Corporate and Investment Finance from UBC while David attended the Haileybury School of Mines in Ontario. Prior to starting HRA we operated an exploration consulting business that assisted companies in the acquisition and exploration of mainly early stage projects in the base and precious metals and industrial mineral sectors. One of our long term contracts entailed us assisting in the design and implementation of a sector wide financial/project database. That involved tracking basically everything in the sector for several years and got Dave and I interested in the stock side of the business. That interest evolved into creating ad hoc resource sector company reviews for friends and associates and ultimately to the creation of the Hard Rock Analyst newsletters.
We ended the consulting side of the business when the newsletters started though we kept our hand in through plenty of free advice (not the best business model, admittedly) and assisted in the formation of a few companies over the years including Pediment Gold (later taken over by Argonaut Gold) and, just before David's death, Precipitate Gold which I continue to be a large shareholder of and advisor to.
While David was the geology side of the business and I certainly make no claims to be a geologist I was born in a mining town to a mining executive and have spent my share of time staking, prospecting, dirt bagging and running surveys. That's a long winded way of saying I know enough to be dangerous. Luckily, I know scores of geologists and have plenty of talent to call on if and when I want second opinions on projects.
I regularly contribute editorial material to a number of websites and publications dealing with both macro economic issues and resource stocks and metals. I speak at a number of conferences each year, both investment oriented and mining sector oriented. As well, I host two subscriber only conferences with fellow newsletter editors Keith Schaefer of the Oil and Gas Investment Bulletin and Lawrence Roulston and Tommy Humphries of Resource Opportunities. .
David and I were very early in pointing out the disastrous effects of gold hedging and gold loan capital financing (1997) and to predict the start of the current secular bull market in commodities based on the movement of the US Dollar (2001) and, more importantly, the acceleration of growth in Asia and India. David was far ahead of the curve in seeing China's voracious appetite for metals coming long before the rest of the market.
