  • TAT Technologies: New Ownership And Resolved Headwinds Present Compelling Upside [View article]
The latest FAVS quarterly report came out August 12: http://bit.ly/16nGNrk

They are actually in great shape. FAVS itself is probably worth $25 - $30. You can find a bit more background on the API sale here: http://bit.ly/16nGQn4

That division was losing money and they sold it for more than the market cap of the entire company. After paying off the debt, they've got a clean balance sheet and a more predictable business.

  • 3 Underappreciated Facts About The JCP Transformation [View article]
JCP isn't a clothing company. It's aiming to be a specialty retailer. While they have a few brands, JCP, Liz Claiborne, etc., they are primarily a vehicle for other brands to sell their items by taking advantage of JCP's low cost real estate.

Ask her what the sales per square foot are of the new shops compared to the old shops. Then ask her if the exclusive Disney Store products will draw traffic to the store. It would also be beneficial for her to know what the sales per square foot are of Disney Stores., then attempt to extrapolate a figure for when they enter JCP. You can then determine the expenses and make an estimate of the free cash generation. Many of us who hold shares have done that, and are very happy with the results.

  • Applying Joel Greenblatt's Strategies To ITT [View article]
Hey Jordan- They're definitely still worth following, you just have to be more careful and conscious about your buy price. Also, keep an eye out for spin-offs where pension costs have been put. Those usually don't turn out well.

The plus for spin-offs is that often they look fairly priced right now, but there is a high chance of earnings and revenue upside surprises a few quarters or a year out b/c of focus, freedom, and nimbleness of new management.

No, it just means we'll get out the other side quicker. If you haven't already, look at Ackman's presentation: http://scr.bi/LznpEq

If 1/10th of it comes true, we'll be good shape. My biggest concerns, actually, are Francis leaving (and what we don't know about it) and them not having the nerve to follow through completely on the new pricing strategy.

  • Buy And Hold Isn't Dead: 5 Stock Picks For The Long Run [View article]
    Fair enough on WMT.

The competitive advantages I see with JCP are its cheap real estate (cost of $4/sq. ft. for leased space and owned real estate worth significantly more than its carrying costs), and the talents of new management coupled with the support from its largest shareholders Ackman and Roth. CEO Ron Johnson has come under fire, for sure, but look at the cost cutting already done if nothing else. The attacks on Johnson and bad quarter (and expectation for a bad Q2 as well) is what allows us to pick up the stock cheap. But, in JCP's case, you've got to be a long term holder to see the value in it.

Look at Wal-Mart's stock performance from 12/31/99 to today. I wouldn't have wanted to buy and hold that. In addition to being a great company, you have to buy it cheap. That's why JCP is attractive.

  • Sizeable Insider Buying In Bank Of America [View article]
Have to reiterate Cosmobaud's comments. It's not an insider buy as it initially appeared. It's a transfer of assets to Gifford from an LLC and trust that he had an interest in.

That being said, Moynihan has been doing a great job and BAC appears to be coming out of this in great shape.

He didn't make that amount of money. That was money he was granted that he otherwise would have made at Apple. That's what it took to pry him away from Apple. He came out even in the transaction.
