  • Review Of My 2014 Picks And Trends [View article]
I'm sure you did better than most other contributors to this site. Would be nice if Seeking Alpha did a year end audit of contributors that posted 10 or more picks per year so readers could judge for themselves. Did you include dividends in your return calculations? Looking forward to your picks for next year.

  • It's Time To Buy The Oil Panic Of 2014 [View article]
The oil to gold ratio is a canard if you ask me. Why should one be correlated to the other? Who uses gold to buy oil? I could see where some people or countries might use oil revenues to buy gold, but if that were the case, then the drop in oil revenues resulting from a drop in price would mean less money to buy gold and thus the price of gold should fall all other things being equal.

  • Keeping The Faith In Chicago Bridge & Iron [View article]
CBI has an Altman Z-score of 1.14. Anything below 1.8 indicates the company is headed for bankruptcy. They have negative working capital, goodwill that is twice shareholders equity and negative cash flow for the trailing twelve months. I don't know what WB sees in-it there is a moat but safety margin just isn't there. I bought but got stopped out and wouldn't dare go back in. There has to be other candidates with a greater degree of safety out there with just as much upside potential.
Also still don't think the market correction is over so why risk anything anywhere yet?

Always good to buy companies the day after they announce bankruptcy. GTAT and CRMB are 2 good plays so far this year. Here's hoping for more.

  • Sell-Off In Refiners Is Overdone [View article]
Cramer provides another take on the refiners:

Hate to think that I should part with my HFC as I have a 14% yoc with the special dividends included. But refiners are notoriously cyclical and it has been a tremendous upcycle for these stocks over the last 3 years. There's always a tremendous downcycle for this industry as well and we could be at the start of that.
Take a look at 20 year charts of the refiners and you'll see they suffer some dramatic drops from the high points of the cycle.
