  • Is Google Scared Of DuckDuckGo? [View article]
In the spirit of trust but verify (re MrMatt), DuckDuckGo [claims it] doesn't have the server or technical infrastructure to collect user identity and search history. Whereas with Google you only trust, and then again the govt. went around them anyway.

Re TOR, did you see the eery video where RIP Michael Hastings said he was using TOR? For TOR to work you have to have everyone use it, otherwise you are waving a red flag, self-selecting yourself as a target.

  • Is Google Scared Of DuckDuckGo? [View article]
Now that Google encrypts searches, and Google News searches I might add, using https, then what is still the allure of DuckDuckGo? Answer: DuckDuckGo does not store user IP addresses, use cookies, and has no database user history of searches - unlike Google. DuckDuckGo is based in the US. Google could simply toss $1 BILLION their direction and unplug them.

The other search competitor that Google more likely loses sleep (read "loses money") over is https://ixquick.com. Ixquick is a European-based cloud company that has a suite of cloud services to supplement search, such as encrypted email, https://startmail.com, and a privacy policy that reads like the Bill of Rights.

The rivals are not within the US (like Microsoft). It's playing out on the global stage.

  • A Father's Investment Advice To His Son [View article]
Thank you, I will email this to my son! I add to this: [young] people, who juggle the many demands of school loans, rent or mortgage, and starting a household, may find more disposable income in which to invest if they (1) buy used cars not new cars; and (2) payoff credit cards in full every month to avoid fees and interest.

thank you @steady_growth. Yes, it's a long long list of hurts - what about salaries, flu vaccines, on & on? The quote "The first priority will be to honor payments on the debt to lenders." is the conventional wisdom... said by so many including Treasury Secy. Lew that I didn't attribute the quote to him, but coulda shoulda. It may or may not be my opinion. I didn't intend to reflect my opinion, but the reality of the expectation. If it ever comes to this point, we will go in a serious financial tailspin. Damning foreigners will ricochet straight back at us and the consequences would be nuclear. I'm not feeling too bad for the politicians, they were elected to run not ruin the country. We should not default on the debt!

  • Isn't It Time For BlackBerry To End The Circus And Get Down To Business? [View instapost]
I would buy an unlocked Z10 for $59 for a personal device! :)

BBs need apps, therein the Android idea.

Though, for the enterprise, I agree with @jovani_hft re BES10. The BES10 fact sheet - http://bit.ly/Z6z66w - suggests 3 servers for BB enterprise MDM, migrating from v.5 to 10+ in a year; it reads like a services contract headache. Who's doing this? CIOs don't want to be systems integrators, with >$1M sys admin contracts annually, over and above server and devices costs. Not when you can let competing cloud providers integrate seamlessly (e.g. MaaS360). I apologize to nit-pick, but would also appreciate to know which specific versions or devices of iOS and Android are compatible with BES?

    Thank you Michael.

  • How Apple's Siri Could Put A Major Dent In Google's Core Search Business [View article]
STRANGE (or cry foul)! The ORIGINAL title of this article was "Can Google's Search Business Survive The Change To Conversational Search?" Why change it? All I'm saying is - if you won't talk about the Google ecosystem of products then why put Google in the title, including the REVISED title, and mail it out to 85,000 SA GOOG alert subscribers? Coz, I got the email, and it feels like a ruse.

Plus where are you getting the 65% mobile web traffic figure, when iOS only has a 40% share of the mobile market in the US (less overseas)? Finally, regardless of platform, are you a Bing search user?

The title of this article about Google search, but the article is about Apple and MS/Bing. Author doesn't mention Google Now or Jelly Bean 4.x. I long ago installed Google Maps, Chrome, and GMail apps on my iPhone, and never use any iOS features. I'm happy with the Google voice recognition so far, and seamless interoperable Chrome browser. [But not happy with the NSA relationship with any of the cloud vendors.] When Apple unplugged Google Maps look what happened (i.e. who trusts Apple Maps directions)? What will you or the [dummy or savvy?] consumer do when Apple moves the search to Bing? It's a marketing, but not a selling point. Folks can unplug Bing on Windows 8 too, and use Google Search or Chrome for the default.
