Focus is mostly on Sirius XM Holdings and income investing,
30 years (through 2000) experience working for basic manufacturing and high tech industries in both the US and Europe. Company sizes ranged from start-ups to Fortune top 10. Experience as manager and/or grunt in fields of financial analysis, revenue forecasting, business planning, budgeting, pricing analysis, compensation planning, contracts, marketing, product management. Have been investing in stocks more than 40 years, options for 30 years and on and off in real estate for 25 years. BS in engineering from Boston U, MBA from Rutgers.
Self taught individual investor working as a practitioner in the medical field. 34 years old and currently managing 7 figures of my own money. I am constantly seeking new investment opportunities although finding it hard to find investments that beat good, boring, dividend paying stocks. I look for stocks with excellent cash flow, share holder friendly management, and for long term investing, stocks that pay a dividend. I have found that investing in stocks with a macro thesis/catalyst not only add a level of synthetic leverage but also create a larger margin of safety.
I'm managing editor for SA PRO. I oversee SA PRO (http://seekingalpha.com/pro/) and Marketplace (http://seekingalpha.com/pages/premium_authors) and support in a few other areas on the site. I'm always happy to hear from readers and contributors, whether to help with questions, hear your feedback, or learn how you're using the site. I've been working at SA since September 2012.
I've been investing for 6 years. I used to write articles for Seeking Alpha before becoming an editor (while I'm proud of the work I did, it probably would not have been up to our PRO standards, which is a good thing). I am probably one of SA's most frequent users, and have learned an immense amount from contributors, readers, and SA employees.
Beyond the market, I like reading, travel, writing, playing/writing/listening to music, and learning languages. Probably most relevant to ask me about SA, but you're welcome to get in touch on anything else as well.
I have worked in the financial service industry for 40 years. My area of expertise is risk management and complex financial products. I have been a frequent speaker, on behalf of many financial firms, to financial professionals across the country.
I have extensive experience in statistics and actuarial science.
10 years investing in $10 or less stocks. My portfolio has grown from an initial $4K investment to well over a million in that period of time. I specialize in identifying under-the-radar, unloved stocks with great upside.
I have spent over thirty years in the financial services industry and I am the author of Dead Companies Walking: How a Hedge Fund Manager Finds Opportunity in Unexpected Places, an Amazon Best Book of the Month. Since 1991, I have managed the hedge fund Crown Capital in Marin County, California.
Whitney Tilson is the founder and Managing Partner of Kase Capital Management, which manages three value-oriented hedge funds. Mr. Tilson is also the co-founder of Value Investor Insight, an investment newsletter.
Mr. Tilson has co-authored two books, The Art of Value Investing: How the World's Best Investors Beat the Market (2013) and More Mortgage Meltdown: 6 Ways to Profit in These Bad Times (2009), was one of the authors of Poor Charlie’s Almanack, the definitive book on Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, and has written for Forbes, the Financial Times, Kiplinger’s, the Motley Fool and TheStreet.com. He was featured in two 60 Minutes segments in December 2008 about the housing crisis (which won an Emmy) and in March 2015 about Lumber Liquidators. He served for two years on the Board of Directors of Cutter & Buck, which designs and markets upscale sportswear, until the company was sold in early 2007.
Mr. Tilson received an MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Business School, where he was elected a Baker Scholar (top 5% of class), and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, with a bachelor’s degree in Government.
Mr. Tilson spent much of his childhood in Tanzania and Nicaragua (his parents are both educators, were among the first couples to meet and marry in the Peace Corps, and have retired in Kenya). Consequently, Mr. Tilson is involved with a number of charities focused on education reform and Africa. For his philanthropic work, he received the 2008 John C. Whitehead Social Enterprise Award from the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York. He is a member and past Chairman of the Manhattan chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization. Mr. Tilson lives in Manhattan with his wife and three teenage daughters.

Edwin G. Dolan holds a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. Early in his career, he was a member of the economics faculty at Dartmouth College, the University of Chicago, and George Mason University. From 1990 to 2001, he taught in Moscow, Russia, where he and his wife founded the American Institute of Business and Economics (AIBEc), an independent, not-for-profit MBA program. After 2001, he taught global macroeconomics, managerial economics, money and banking, and other courses at several universities in Europe, including Central European University in Budapest, the University of Economics in Prague, and the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. He is the author of Introduction to Economics from BVTPublishing and numerous academic articles. He makes his home in Northwest Lower Michigan.
I focus on the microcap space (market cap below $250 million) because it is one of the most inefficient and "alpha rich" areas of the global equity market, which provides the greatest opportunity to generate alpha through fundamental research.
I use a bottom up, investment decision making process. The ideal investment has an asymmetric risk/return profile with a limited downside (e.g. high net cash balance, strong cash flow) and significant upside (e.g. asset value extraction, overlooked business model transition).
Microcaps are particularly attractive to the following groups:
Activist investors. A small absolute investment (on a dollar basis) can be leveraged into a relatively large position (as a percentage of shares outstanding), which provides a greater ability to demand change.
Private equity firms. The persistent microcap discount can be “arbed away” via an LBO with the new owners accruing all of the gains for themselves. The small absolute size of many microcaps on an EV basis significantly expands the number of firms able to pursue this strategy.
This inefficiency exists for several reasons.
A lack of analyst coverage due to lower trading volume (less soft dollars from HF/MF), the global settlement that permanently severed the link between research/banking and the rise in electronic trading/decimalization. Moreover, none of these trends are likely to reverse for the foreseeable future (if ever).
A lack of institutional products given the natural capacity constraint for new/existing managers.
An inability to effectively implement a passive approach (e.g. ETFs, index funds) due to the lower liquidity and wider bid/ask spread. However, each of these obstacles can be overcome by using a combination of electronic trading tools (e.g. algos) and patience in building a positive size.
Inaccurate and persistent misconceptions about microcaps (e.g. they are riskier than larger cap stocks).
I currently trade for my personal account but would like to move into the investment management side of the industry.

Born 1970 , Grad B.Comm U.Vic 1995 , Finance Manager , Married with Two(2) beautiful girls who will be living with me a long time. The world continues to create money and refuses to accept that the standard of living in the Modern World needs to decline. This is the only way that the planet can return to health. Sadly we have created a system that is out of control and we are all forced to obey the rules of chasing the money.
