  • Questionable Report On Student Transportation Provides A Buying Opportunity [View article]
basically, operating cash flow less the interest on the outstanding debt less the maintenance capex less all taxes > the dividends paid? so the additional stock issuance is for funding the capex to acquire new business? that's basically an ok business model for cable systems, oil & gas pipelines, and real estate management companies. is it a good business model for government contracts for student transportation? maybe. high cash salaries for senior executives is suspicious...the whole situation is similar to the debate over at stonemore partners, the cemetery operators

  • Dividend Income From Agricultural And Timber Producing Companies [View article]
thanks, scooter. the rebound in housing stocks last year was not matched by a rebound in forest products (timber) stocks -- its also interesting that banks with lots of "real estate owned" are finally working those bad assets off their books. with the pine beetle blight in canada curbing supply, and demand for construction products increasing, perhaps timber companies are in a sweet spot. the fact that many are REIT structures means that will translate into immediate shareholder income without greedy managers (e.g. AIG) getting in the way...

I welcome the insight of your local expertise. I also have the Potlatch Company (PCH) in the list -- that company claims 1.43 million acres in Idaho, Arkansas and Minnesota, managed primarily for lumber for building materials. At a $1.8 billion current enterprise value that implies a value of $1,260 per acre so not far off from your JOE estimate.

  • PDL BioPharma CEO Explains Strategy To Maintain Dividend With Significant Growth [View article]
There is a statement in the post from the CEO of the company. This is known as a "primary source". http://bit.ly/Sx4uHh
    How is that not "evidence"?

Where is your "evidence" from primary source material supporting your statement that "no new product bearing royalties will enter the pipeline" is the correct interpretation of the existing royalty agreements?

Current Q3 2012 guidance is $85 million. 20% per quarter minimum sales growth in Perjeta at 3% royalty rate up to $1.5 billion in sales which is purely additive to royalty stream. All other royalties are going up at 3% to 5%.

There is no "downward slope" in royalty stream. Sales are increasing.

    Paulo:

First, it's interesting that you use the royal "We" in your last comment.

Second, perhaps you should read the article before commenting, instead of simply repeating your mistaken assumptions that have cost anyone investing on your advice about $1 in stock upside over the last month and quarter's worth of PDLI dividend.

If you did read the article you would find out that the President and CEO of PDL Biopharma has stated that the company will wind up operations at the Q4 2013/Q1 2014 "fork in the road" if the company determines that decision will increase shareholder value.
With 6 quarters of royalty receipts after the Queens et al. patents end and royalty receipts trending to well over $400 million per year there is ample cash coming in to cover the current enterprise value of the company. 10 quarters of $100 million in royalty receipts after the "fork" decision plus the net cash already on the balance sheet means that the current company valuation is correct.

Third, the real question is the option value of the Alzheimer's treatment currently before the FDA, which could easily be worth another $1 billion in current value and the breach of contract case that is scheduled for court within the 2014/2015 time horizon, potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

If either of those two events occur, the shareholders of PDLI could see the current stock price double by the end of 2014.

In summary: a clear potential for the stock price to double in value, a current cash yield of 8%, and a downside in value at the current stock price. If that's not "alpha" I don't know what is.

  • U.S. Energy Independence: A Strategic Portfolio [View article]
Even natural gas use is due in part to government regulation that increases the cost of operating coal fired electrical plants which are the cheapest electrical rates around -- $.08 per kwh or about. As coal is mandated to clean up or close, natural gas becomes the next best option. The fact that we've doubled the amount of natural gas sourced domestically through greater use of fracking means that we can make that switch somewhat painless. Hopefully, the complete devastation in solar cell production stocks due to the immense Chinese production subsidies will not slow the fall in the cost of generating solar power which is now at California grid parity or about $.14 per kwh.

Some additional information on the subsidies you reference is here:

  • U.S. Energy Independence: A Strategic Portfolio [View article]
The last point is well taken -- charging up an EV during the day means its not a commuter car which defeats the thesis somewhat, however, the beauty of it comes when there are solar chargers at the office as well, and the car can be become a portable electrical storage device -- charging during the day while you're at the office then putting some power back into the grid on the weekend, storing and moving power around the grid. I think this is where Elon Musk is trying to go with his solar city venture.

Also Enphase (ENPH) is in a bit of freefall. It was a tough IPO, with its venture capital backers needed to buy in to get it done, and now the lock ups are expiring and there are some sellers driving the price down. I don't know how well the stock price will weather that storm, its a bit of a Facebook type of situation only many times smaller of course.

Both the republican and democratic presidential candidates have been threatening a logical energy strategy for 40 years. It has yet to happen. Using corn grown during a drought as mandated source of additional gasoline is an example of what Washington D.C. thinks is a valid energy policy.
