Oracle CEO to IBM, HP: Don't Get Your Hopes Up, We're Keeping Sun's Hardware [View article]
I think Ellison is very incorrect in his statements about apple. gates is the worlds's wealthiest man because he sold software that ran on lots of hardware. jobs chose to run his software only on his hardware and he has < 10% market share because of it. whether oracle can make some super db machine with sun hardware remains to be seen. i work a lot with a lot of database products and it still seems to me that oracle broke a rule of software which is, don't buy a hardware vendor and irritate a lot of your hardware vendors. sun, hp, ibm, dell, all sold a lot oracle db and oracle applications. now three quarters of their hardware vendors are nervous. can anyone think of a software vendor that bought a hardware vendor that worked? the only thing that may save oracle is that there is no really strong independent database other than open source for hp and dell to go to. sybase and informix all cratered in the general relational market.
