  • Expecting A Big Q3 Dividend Reduction From Alon USA Partners [View article]
Not exactly. The refinery MLPs have always made clear that they will pay out what they earn and that those earning can vary significantly. The trick with this type of MLP is to buy when dividends and share prices are low and make out like bandits when business is good and the companies can make big dividend payments. These are not for those looking for a steady quarterly dividend check.

I understand your logic. However, while the quarterly report was kind of a stinker, the share price was stable. To me this means that investors and markets are already looking ahead to the prospects I discussed.

  • Eagle Rock Energy Partners Cash Flow Struggles Put 11% Yield At Risk [View article]
I just try to stay away from companies that are attempting to turn things around. For income stocks, I am more comfortable with those that are already in a good place and can support and grow the distributions. A company generally cannot get all of the bad news out of its system in a quarter or even a few quarters.

MLPs typically fund growth with a combination of unit issue and debt. I think they can shelf register smaller amounts of share issue. EROC units outstanding have increased from 116 million at the end of 2011 to 157 million at the end of Q2 this year.

Rarely happens. I find it interesting to see investors justify their holdings in a dog stock instead of trying to find a company that is doing better. This is especially true with high-yield stocks.

I think that KMI is way undervalued and will eventually be a very good investment for the patient. I think the complicated nature of the PAGP IPO may be keeping some away. A couple of quarters of increasing dividends will bring the spotlight back on this stock and so will I.

Capt Bill, I feel your pain. Spent a lot of time myself yesterday with the S-1. From my reading PAGP just pays the costs of being a separate listed tax paying company, which runs about $2 mil. per year. AAP also needs little in the way of expenses except the printing of those very large checks to the GP ownership members.

  • Between The Lines: Will Linn Energy Make Merger Announcement Soon? [View article]
If the merger is not approved it is possible that BRY would drop back into the mid $30's. If it is approved, I can easily see LNCO moving up into the high $30's, where the share price was before the shorts took their shots.

Phil, very good point. I did not think to look at the exchange ratio. Something has got to give. The BRY price seems to point to a sweetened deal from LNCO. BRY was in the low $30's before the merger was announced. Wouldn't the shares drop back to that range if the deal was off?

Another thought. What would happen to the LINE & LNCO share prices if an announcement was made that the merger has been approved by BRY? That discount would probably immediately disappear.

Bill, I think PAA is one of the great income growth MLPs. Nothing wrong with that investment. PAGP is just another way to participate in the distribution growth from PAA. PAGP will have no effect on the PAA business. The trade-off is lower current yield for faster dividend growth in the futures.

Both KMI and WMB are pushing towards becoming more pure play GP companies, but these two still have a lot of additional businesses. TRGP is a corporate pure GP play.

Capt. Bill, you are close. limited partnerships can elect to be taxed as a corporation or as a partnership. In most cases the partnership path is the most tax advantaged. However if the LP earns tax advantaged income, filing as a corporation cleans up the tax reporting mess for investors.
