Very good analysis. I echo your thoughts on APL. In this market it is hard to tell if a company is really in trouble or just part of the general sell off. I was encouraged by the Q4 news.

Richandmer, The portfolios and posts on my blog are a learning process for me. SA is kind enough to reprint my thoughts here. The Income Portfolio has performed similar to the overall market. Its biggest downfall was an over reliance on energy stocks. I put the portfolio into an actively manage mode for the 2nd half of 2008, so absorbed all of the bad news for that period.
I have found I tend to stock with a stock too long when the news is bad. I am pretty comfortable with where the stocks in the portfolio are now and they have performed well for the first few days of the new year. Check back to my site in a few months and see how things are going.
Skip in CA, I do think your analysis is correct. APL is a complicated company that has a lot of moving parts. I still believe that increasing energy prices will bail them out. The stock price has a lot of upside if the scenario works out. If energy prices stay low I think they will struggle.

I believe the MLP have a lot of non cash items that go against earnings but really do not affect cash flow. The important figure is distributable cash flow. That is the real money left after paying the expense. I believe from the last quarter report APL has about a 1.2 times coverage on the dividend. We will see what they report for Q3 next week.

Headwaters had years of profitable growth before they were forced out of the Section 29 synfuel business by government rule changes. The company appears to have a plan to develop new technologies and I started discussing the stock at a price near where it is today and hold a profitable position at this time. The next few quarters should tell whether management can follow through on their plans.
