  • One Reason Why You Shouldn't Ignore Semiconductors This Fall [View article]
Liso, Thanks for reading and commenting. TXN has neutral seasonality for the period. It has traded higher in 4 of the past 5 years, but fell in the preceding 4 years. Over the past decade, its up 6 times. These other names have a more exploitable trend. There's also a number of small and mid cap semi's with important seasonal trends, which I didn't mention. If interested, you can order the database. It's not very expensive. http://bit.ly/H8nJRo Thanks again!

Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. The issue has been raised with the board, according to the earnings conference call. But, who knows if that will bear fruit. Happy investing.

  • Barrett Business Services: California Supports Growth [View article]
Historically, HR and employment services stocks tend to trade higher into year end in line with demand for seasonal employment. For example, the ASA Weekly Staffing Index historically peaks in Q4.

  • Investing In Optical Networks Is Getting Fun Again [View article]
Andreas, Seasonality suggests shares tend to reward rather than punish over the coming three months -- adding conviction. But, the reason to own it outlined in my article is the upgrade cycle to 100 G and higher. Thanks for reading.

Great point! Those that lived through that period have the battle scars to prove it. Thanks for reading!

  • 2 Railroad Operators To Buy This September [View article]
I agree with you that set-and-forget approaches are far too risky with high priced stocks. That said, plenty of money was made in GOOG and AAPL from 100 to 200, to 300, to 400. The key is actively managing your risk to pair your dollar exposure. Owning 5 shares is perfectly fine. The performance return is what matters. Thanks for reading and happy investing!

My pleasure. I'm writing a few more like this on different stocks with similar seasonal tailwinds.

  • Seasonal Patterns In Stock Markets: 319 Years Of Evidence [View article]
This is a very nice piece. As an aside, I stumbled on it after your comment on the forum, so that was worthwhile! Having been in retail for a decade and providing advice to portfolio managers for the last 15, I'm a big believer in seasonality. It can also be broken down further, to include sector, industries and individual stocks. In a shameless plug, I do this type of drill down research for individual subscribers through http://bit.ly/H8nJRo. Regardless, I find the subject fascinating and appreciate your writing on the subject.

I agree with most of your points. The trend in ROA and ROE makes me mildly more comfortable with as you said "anemic" results. Additionally, the pickup in Boston appears real. If it is, those numbers should improve. Bank of Rhode Island is a bit of a gamble. But, I think they bought it 'right'. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Back of napkin, I'd like to get 1.3x book, which is up 13% or $11.34. That said, if book can keep growing this year, upside could be more. Of course, no guarantee. But, that's as good a starting point on target as any.

  • Mentor Graphics: Increasingly Complex Autos Support Dividends And Buybacks [View article]
Thanks for reading. I think a healthier auto industry supports more rapid adoption of Mentor products throughout the supply chain. I could have used auto industry profitability as a proxy for willingness to increase R&D spend, but I chose vehicle sales instead.
