  • Wall Street Analysts Deserve a 'Sell' Rating [View article]
Wall Street analysts still garner the lion's share of institutional research budgets, simply because they've mastered the meet-and-greet. Arranging meetings with executives and getting compensated for it is far from cutting edge, yet, compensation to these analysts often dwarfs what is spent on independent research firms, where - self-servingly - some of the best research is produced.

@thiazole, exactly. You can miss out on GM and Ford in 2009 because you fret PE's are too high. PE's are most valuable, in my experience, in two ways. First, if they're using forward earnings. Second, if your considering PE in relation to historical 5 year PE highs and lows. Cyclicals should be bought when earnings stink to get the best price and sold when PE's get to mid single digits..

A move to a faster refresh cycle could help suppliers given it would mean faster uptake of the latest designs.

Thanks for reading! I should have worded my comments regarding the wash sale better. Investors forced to sell Q3 purchases at losses to cover margin calls will be able to re-enter post 30 days.

  • Oct New Home Sales: 368K vs. 387K expected, 369K prior (revised). [View news story]
The 'miss' is a bit misleading. It still reflects a 17% lift from a year ago. Margin of error is big. Better to look at permits, up 29.8% from the prior year. Months supply is tight still at 4.8, down from 6.1 last year. Months on the market is also strong at 5.9, down from 8 in June and 7.2 last year.

  • Microsoft's Surface Supplier Cheat Sheet [View article]
@Kevin Thanks for reading. I doubt MSFT is pleased with the market share/traction of Nokia/Windows OS phones. If NOK succeeded in winning share, MSFT would have had more flexibility in deciding whether to compete on hardware, such as it did with the Xbox, or rely on NOK, HTC, etc, such as it has with PCs. IMHO, MSFT wasn't given much choice but to develop its own hardware. At least now, MSFT controls the success or failure of Windows 8 in mobile devices, rather than relying on third party's like NOK.

  • Nokia's Lumia 920 Is Still A Niche Play [View article]
For those keeping score at home, Nokia up 4 of past 10 Septembers (not good); and 7 of past 10 Octobers (better). Could suggest patient accumulation of NOK in Sept pays off next month. But, clearly this has been a falling knife.

I was refering to why it didn't get a faster processor or higher resolution. They've decided in the past to shave corners on the guts to keep the price point low enough to get scale. @mitrado that got me a good laugh; amazing to think rounded corners could be patented!

  • Nuance Demand Remains 'Unprecedented' [View article]
@Cassandra NUAN is highly acquisitive which has created a huge spread between GAAP and Non-GAAP reported EPS. If you use O'Neil, they use non-GAAP, which gives NUAN a current 2012 PE of 14 and forward PE of 13. GAAP reported EPS will give you the sky high number you saw. To get a more clarity, you can click this link to the FY11 results and scroll down to the notes where they discuss non-GAAP and acquisition related revenue. Hope this helps!

@no and @punk It's a fascinating subject! Personally, I've been at this since before LTCM imploded and if there's anything I've learned, it's that all information is good information. So, I'd love to hear others approaches, whether it be advance decline lines, MACD, etc.

  • Bottoming Out, Not Armageddon [View article]
Jack, I have to think folks are feeling too confident in their doomsday outlook. Bottoms are sloppy. They're messy. They're ugly. And, no telling if this is it or not. But, I do think folks are getting some great stocks on sale and if they're willing to leg into them over the next 6 weeks, they'll be rewarded. We'll see. Keep writing!
